Otago Coastal Guardians Inc And to provide education and public awareness programmes for the protection and conservation of our Otago Coastal treasures.

A community based environmental group serving the Otago Coastline for the protection of surf breaks, water quality, coastal wildlife and dune conservation and public education of these. Otago Coastal Guardians (Inc) is an incorporated society that serves to address issues, especially those relating to protection of sand dune systems, surf breaks, wildlife conservation, in Coastal Otago and in the surrounding marine environment.

Port Otago is engaging the public in a series of open days as part of its application to renew its long-term consent for inshore dredging disposal.

Forest and Birds' extensive campaign to stop open cast coal mining on the Denniston plateau has failed with the Environment courts decision to allow Bathhurst Resources permission to mine with only a clause the company will now only be required to only carry out its “best endeavours” to make amends to environmental damage.

This is totally unacceptable. Forest and bird goes on to say that they did not receive adequate support from DOC, which parallels the issues that we have had with the Port Otago dredging consents where DOC took a neutral stance, even though the very policy to protect surfbreaks from this very activity which was included in DOCs own NZCPS was under threat!
