East Taieri School got the full Te Nohoaka o Tukiauau experience over the last 3 days from scorching hot sun to cold wind and rain ☀️🌧️

Had a pretty special visit from a rare Kārearea (nz falcon) who swooped in super close to check out the last group of the day 🦅

Recently, we were honoured to welcome the uri of William Palmer, Ann Tamairaki Holmes, Tītī, and Te Haukawe to the wetlands for an afternoon grounded in whakapapa, kōrero and reconnection with the whenua. Whānau travelled from Australia, Te Ika-a-Māui and Ōtautahi to gather in this wāhi taonga and stand where their tūpuna once stood.

For many, it was their first opportunity to truly connect with this whenua in a lived way. Through sharing local pūrākau and histories, the stories of place were brought to life, strengthening the threads between past and present. Trustee Adrian Woodhouse felt privileged to help facilitate these reconnections, weaving together kōrero that honoured both the whenua and the mana of the whānau.

It was deeply uplifting to witness the rekindling of relationships with place, and to see local whānau step forward, offering their time and aroha to support the ongoing mahi at the wetlands. These moments affirm that when whakapapa is acknowledged and nurtured, the mauri of the whenua and the people is strengthened together.
