❤️ A Heartfelt Thank You & Final Farewell from Southern Youth Development (syd)

We have officially closed our doors. Following our final day of operations on Monday, December 15th, 2025, we want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who helped us celebrate 38 incredible years of service to the rangatahi of Dunedin, Waitaki and Clutha.
Your presence at our farewell event was the perfect testament to the community we built together. Thank you for coming and sharing in the memories.

⭐ The True Heart of syd: You Are the Success Story
While syd’s chapter as a standalone entity has concluded, the impact and the profound legacy built by our participants will live on.
For nearly four decades, syd was a haven, a place of learning, and a community throughout Waitaki, Otago, and the Clutha District.
Our legacy is carried entirely by you, our young people. syd was not defined by its walls; it was defined by the energy, the resilience, and the sheer potential of every rangatahi who walked through our doors. We measure our success in the confidence built, the leadership skills developed, and the positive futures forged by our thousands of alumni. To every young person, past and present: You are the success story of syd. The growth and courage you showed is the indelible mark we leave behind.

🙏 Gratitude for a Dedicated Community
The success and longevity of syd were only possible because of the dedication of many. We thank you all for sharing our vision.

To Our Staff: Thank you to every youth worker and leader. Your unwavering belief in young people was the engine of this organisation.

To Our Volunteers and Board Members: Thank you for safeguarding our kaupapa.

To Our Community Supporters: Thank you for providing the resources that enabled life-changing services.

The Memories We Cherish

We close this chapter with immense pride. We cherish every memory and every life that was positively influenced.

Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou ka ora ai te iwi.

Media Release: Southern Youth Development (syd) to Merge with Te Hou Ora Whānau Services (THO) after 38 Years of Service

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dunedin/Clutha – [14th November 2025] – After nearly four decades of service to young people across Dunedin and Clutha, the board of syd has announced that the organisation will be merging with THO.

The merger marks the end of syd as a standalone entity, which has touched and lifted countless young lives over the past 38 years. While the team is sad to be closing its doors on Monday 15th of December 2025. This decision was made following an extensive review of the current financial landscape.

“The funding environment is incredibly tough. The syd board determined that it is no longer possible to sustain the high-quality, impactful services we are committed to delivering with the funding available to syd alone,” said Ben, Chair of syd.

Mission to Continue

To ensure the vital work continues, syd has agreed to merge with Te Hou Ora. THO is seen as a strong strategic fit, sharing a similar mission and kaupapa and possessing a long and proven track record of its own. syd will bring its considerable strength and mission to enhance THO’s capabilities.

“There has never been a greater need for support for our young people,” said Kelly Gay, CEO of syd. “We are extremely pleased that through this merger, syd’s mission and essential work will not only continue but be strengthened under the umbrella of THO. This ensures the legacy of support we've built will carry on.”

Desiree Mahy, Kaihautu of THO, stated, "The kaupapa and mission of Southern Youth Development is so very important. Te Hou Ora is honoured to be carrying that legacy forward.

I orea te tuatara ka patu ki waho.

End.

The end of a truly special era. 💔

Today, we officially close the chapter on Gardens @ syd, a cornerstone programme that ran for over fifteen profound years.

This was so much more than a maintenance crew; it was a launchpad. Gardens @ syd (formally Gardens @ malcam) was the foundation where many rangatahi took their crucial first step into the working world, earning money and gaining the real-world skills and confidence to succeed. The dedication shown by our young people and the resulting success - with the vast majority moving directly into other employment - is the lasting legacy of this incredible journey.

We are profoundly grateful to the Dunedin City Council Gardens team at the Dunedin Botanic Garden for their invaluable, long-term partnership, and to every supervisor who mentored, guided, and championed our young people. Most importantly, thank you to all the dedicated trainees who poured their effort and heart into this programme. Your growth is our greatest pride.

Please take a moment to look through the attached photos of the names and dates of everyone who worked in the program, starting from 2008. Tag someone you remember or yourself!

Thank you, Gardens @ syd, for over fifteen years of unforgettable impact. You will be deeply missed.

What a fantastic achievement! Huge congratulations to Alex, a dedicated young person from our alternative education programme doing education through , who has been named Adult Learner of the Week and won a brand-new tablet! Alex was highly motivated to pursue Pathways Awarua because he recognised its benefits for brain functioning and was determined to complete it successfully for his future. He was surprised and thrilled to receive the tablet, which he is very excited to use as a replacement for his older laptop. When he's not busy with his education, Alex enjoys music and making edits. Well done, Alex!
