Exercise Blue Skies Recap - W/O B Mackie

Over the weekend, cadets travelled to Omarama for some gliding fun. The weather was mint all weekend, allowing for heaps of gliding time.
Friday was all about setting up and meeting the team, learning basic controls and procedures, as well as munching on garlic bread.

Saturday was a delightful day of gliding, learning, and setting records. Daily aircraft inspections were carried out, and gliders were walked to the launch point. Cadets were given control of the gliders, experiencing what it’s like to fly. They were also involved in moving gliders, tugging winch cables, and hooking them up. Lunch came around, and cadets were delighted to indulge in more garlic bread, along with some wraps and a BBQ. After lunch, records were set, including longest flight time of one hour, altitude of 6,000 ft, and the first person to be in control of a glider while holding a spew bag in the other hand.

Sunday came along, and the instructors let cadets experience aerobatic manoeuvres, including flying upside down and intense G-turns, with some cadets also experiencing the inside of the winch truck. The weekend ended with a small prizegiving and debrief.

Huge thank you to for this amazing opportunity.

Last weekend, our cadets once again volunteered for the Southern Cross All Breeds Cat Club Show that was held at Taieri Bowling Club. Where the cadets help set up the day before and help with raffle and entry tickets the day of. The cadets were also able to look at and pet the cats! Below are some written experiences from our cadets.

Cadet O. Rudd
Recently, I had the opportunity to help with the cat show. I enjoyed my time helping and I saw lots of cats. I was also able to help with managing admittance. There was a new cuddle corner, so I went over there for a bit since I love cats. It was great getting out into the community. Overall, I had a good time helping with the cat show and will definitely return next year.

Flight Sergeant B. Mackie
Last weekend our cadets from 42 Squadron ATC Dunedin were involved with helping setup and assist in the annual cat show. Setting up involved hours of unfolding cages, setting up bollards and unfolding tables. On the Sunday the cat show was in full swing, around a thousand people through the doors and over 70 cats showing of their talents
