Ever wondered what a 100+ People Who Care | Dunedin meeting is actually like?

Here’s a quick look at one of our evenings, from the perspective of someone in the crowd.

One hour. Three local charities. A room full of people who want to make a difference in Dunedin. And together, a $100 donation can become thousands of dollars of support for one local cause.

But 100+ is about more than the money. It’s about hearing the stories of organisations doing great work in our city, connecting with others, and being part of something positive in our community.

Our next meeting is 7-8pm on November 18th at the Otago Golf Club. If you’re curious, come along and see what it’s all about, or come as the guest of one of our members.

What a way to celebrate our three-year anniversary meeting!

This week, our members selected K9 Medical Detection NZ to receive our collective donation, estimated to be $7,000 - $7,500!

"The team at K9 Medical Detection are extremely grateful for the support from the 100+ People Who Care Dunedin members. The financial contribution contributes to the health and welfare of our two in training cancer detection dogs; Star and Seeker. They require, from the puppy’s perspective, a multitude of toys, and from our perspective, an experienced environmental trainer, an experienced scent detection trainer and veterinary care. This is to grow and develop into world-class medical detection dogs."

I'm always amazed by the wider impact too! Which is already spreading well beyond our selected charity.

We’ve already had $250 donated to Dunedin Bedding Bank, with more non-financial support on the way, and an incredible $1,250 donated (and counting) to Warrington Surf Life Saving Club towards new large tent shelters for sporting events.

This is one of the things we love about these nights, all three charities get the opportunity to share their story with a room full of people who care about our community!

Wow - three years down next week! It's hard to believe that a simple idea has turned into an impactful giving group that has contributed tens of thousands of dollars back to the local Dunedin community!

To celebrate, I'll be providing antipasto platters, sandwiches, and savouries from 6:00pm–7:00pm for anyone who would like to come along for an informal catch-up before the meeting. Each year this has been a great opportunity to introduce friends, family, or colleagues to what 100+ People Who Care Dunedin is all about, so please feel free to invite others along. The more the merrier 😊

The meeting itself will run as usual from 7:00pm–8:00pm upstairs at Otago Golf Club. Once parked, walk along the front of the golf club past the Pro Shop to the clubroom entry stairs, which will be clearly signposted. Wheelchair access is available by parking in the upper car park and entering through the rear of the building into the function room.

We're now just 35 members away from our goal of 100 members, and have distributed over $58,000 to local Dunedin charities over the past three years! Every new member means more funding can go directly to local charities!

Together, we've raised $6,500 for The Playhouse Theatre 🎭💙

The Playhouse Theatre is raising over $5 million to restore and refurbish its historic 1876 theatre building, ensuring it remains a warm, safe, accessible, and welcoming space for future generations.

In 2025, the Dunedin City Council pledged to contribute $3.35 million towards the project, provided the remaining funds were raised through community support.

Best known for its much-loved Children's Theatre productions, The Playhouse hopes to continue creating magical theatre experiences for Dunedin families for many years to come. Every donation helps keep this treasured community theatre alive.

We love seeing the impact of community giving. It really is as simple as one hour and $100 each, combining to make a real difference.

It was also encouraging to see additional support for our runner-up charities, with donations of $200 to Age Concern Otago and $200 to SuperGrans Dunedin.

Even better, one of our members arranged for the lighting throughout SuperGrans' premises to be replaced (labour and costs completely free of charge). It's a great example of what this group is all about, not just financial support, but people using their skills, resources, and networks to make a practical difference in our community.

Thank you to everyone who continues to be part of this community. Quarter after quarter, we're reminded of what can be achieved when local people come together to support local causes.

Every donation will help keep this treasured community theatre alive 🎭
