Meet Some of Our Amazing Volunteers 💜
As National Volunteer Week continues, we'd like to introduce a few of the wonderful people who help make Alzheimer's Otago's programmes and support services so special.

Our volunteers come from all different backgrounds and generations, but they all share a passion for supporting people living with dementia and their whānau. Whether they're helping at activity groups, music sessions, providing 1:1 support, having morning coffees or simply sharing a conversation and a smile, they help create welcoming spaces where people feel connected, supported and valued.

For Emma, volunteering with our Dementia Mate Wareware Homeshare Programme was inspired by her own family's experience with Alzheimer's. Since joining the programme in 2024, she has brought laughter, enthusiasm and warmth to every session. Emma says one of the things she values most is the friendships she has made and the opportunity to provide carers and partners with some well-earned time to recharge.

Kay volunteers with our Music and Movement programme in Wānaka, helping create fun, engaging sessions where participants can connect through music and movement. Her enthusiasm and support help make the programme an enjoyable and welcoming part of the week for everyone involved.

Mary volunteers because she enjoys helping others get out and about and connect with their community. "I like spending time with different people – if I can help them get out and about and enjoy themselves that's really important and I get a lot of joy from the joy in their faces."

Ros says volunteering brings a sense of fun and connection to her own life. "I enjoy the sense of play and fun that being with this group brings to my life – they are all amazing people who have so much to offer us."

Alongside volunteers like Emma, Mary, Ros, Kay and Annie are many others who generously give their time, energy and kindness every week. Their compassion, friendship and support make a real difference to the lives of people living with dementia and their care partners across Otago.

Thank you for everything you do. 💙

Thank You Volunteers💜
At Alzheimer's Otago, we extend our deepest gratitude to our 40 wonderful volunteers across the region who give their time, energy, and kindness to support people living with dementia.

Our volunteers help create welcoming, friendly, and meaningful social and activity programmes where people can connect, share conversations, enjoy activities, and feel a sense of belonging. From a helping hand with activities to serving morning tea or offering a warm smile, their presence makes a real difference every day.

We are especially proud of the diversity within our volunteer team, including young people and University of Otago students alongside older volunteers. These intergenerational relationships are something truly special—bringing fresh perspectives, shared learning, laughter, and genuine human connection that enriches everyone involved.

Our volunteers come from all different backgrounds, from librarians to retired teachers, from pest controllers to nurses, from the age of 23 to 80s. They all bring their own unique character and care to the groups, but they all bring the same passion to give back to the community and to support those in our groups to feel empowered, listened to and to have fun.
For some of them it is a personal story that brought them to volunteering, a family member who had dementia, for others it's about giving back in general, for lots, the sessions are one of the highlights of their week.

Their support not only enhances the lives of people living with dementia but also provides valuable respite for family members and care partners.

To all our volunteers across Otago - thank you. Your compassion, generosity, and commitment are deeply valued and make a lasting difference in our community.

Happy National Volunteer Week from Alzheimer's Otago💜

Stay tuned this week as we share the stories of some of the wonderful volunteers who make our services possible.
