We can STOP the DCC from building a landfill upstream in the creek that forms Dunedin families favourite swimming spot at Brighton Beach. The DCC cannot guarantee the lifespan of the proposed landfill's liner and any risk of toxic leachate spreading through Brighton's creek and beach, is unacceptable. Brighton is the favourite go-to swim spot for Dunedin's families with young children every summer, and the Ōtokia Creek is home to threatened native New Zealand fish species, including; Longfin Eels, Banded Kōkopu, Giant Kōkopu, and Koura Freshwater Crayfish, just to name a few. Council is seeking a limited notification consent process. We need funds now to get the lawyers letters flowing, and encourage the ORC to make this a fully notified consent process so the public can have its say and voice their concerns. Your kids and grandkids will thank you for protecting the favourite swimming spot of your parents and grandparents . Please do your part to fight the Dunedin City Council, and stop them building a massive landfill at the headwater of the Ōtokia Creek. Aroha nui

Aaron Hawkins For Mayor must have felt bloody conflicted presenting an award to a local environmental charitable trust for their amazing biodiversity restoration work with one hand, while actively working to build a rubbish dump in the waterway this group is trying to restore. The following words from Ōtokia Creek and Marsh Habitat Trust sum it all up nicely...

"We sensed the irony of being presented the award by his worship Aaron Hawkins For Mayor who appears to be spearheading the effort to build a rubbish dump in the river gully at the headwater of our taonga, the Ōtokia Creek. The Brighton Landfill proposal consumes many hours of our time and funds that, in the future, we hope to allocate to even more biodiversity restoration and amenity improvement. We hope to leave a better legacy to these inspirational tamariki and youth in our city, whose initiative and drive, bode well for the future of Ōtepoti! 🌱🌿💚"

So far our expert witnesses, while presenting to the Resource Consent Hearing process, have brought about the DCC having to carry out a 'Public Health Assessment' on the effects of pollution to the Ōtokia Creek and people who use it. This. is. huge.
We have also made a strong case for reducing the types of waste the tip would receive, in the unlikely event the tip gets the go ahead. However costs are still racking up and we need community support to keep taking the fight to the DCC.
