Brighton Trapping Project

Brighton Trapping Project We're Brighton residents whose vision is to increase native wildlife by removing introduced mammals My wife, Lana, and I have lived in Brighton for 14 years.

We want to kick off this page by introducing the Brighton Trapping Project team! We're all Brighton locals, love this place, work on the trapping project as volunteers and have different roles. Here's a little about each of us and our roles:

Ritchie
Role: the trap guy
From a rural background and an engineering career, I want to bring some of these skills to the project. Be it dropping off traps,

building or repairing, I want to see loads of traps out there reducing predators of our native birdlife and bringing more birdsong back to this amazing wee community. Tom
Role: Trap.NZ guru & chew card surveillance
My family and I live on a small farm just south of Brighton. My wife and I are both vets and I run a company focussed on livestock disease control. Some of my work includes assessing the impact of predator control on eradicating bovine tuberculosis throughout NZ. I'm really passionate that we can do the same locally and see thriving, well-protected wildlife in our own paradise right here. Baza
Role: all-rounder
My first name is Barry but I prefer to be called Baza. I have had an interest in pest control since an early age, being brought up on a farm. I am enjoying my involvement with the Brighton Trapping Project, especially getting to know the other people involved and members of our local community. Emma
Role: trapping advice (via Facebook) & Trap.NZ admin
Over the many years of travelling and living in different countries I have developed such a strong interest for wildlife, conservation, and environmental management that I decided to shift career and study these topics as a mature student at University of Otago, of which I am currently enjoying full time. I am excited to be a part of this important project and am looking forward to getting to know the local community better and to see more native species in our neighborhood. Claudia
Role: trapping advice (via Facebook) & all-rounder
My partner and I live on a lifestyle block just south of Brighton. I'm a science filmmaker and writer, and have worked on some pretty incredible conservation projects. These include being a hunter on a rabbit and rodent eradication in the sub-Antarctic islands, and a coordinator to help school teachers and students track and trap predators in Dunedin. I look forward to providing all our backyard trappers with advice and running my own trapline to increase our local birdlife. We'll provide lots of advice and updates via this page - so make sure you 'like' the page to stay connected. If you need to get in touch with any of us, send us a message on this page or email [email protected]

It was a delight to inspire 29 Enviroschool student leaders and their teachers at Ōtokia Creek and Marsh this morning, in partnership with City Sanctuary and several other groups.
Coordinators Claudia (BTP) and Lizzy (CS) focussed on predator monitoring as the first step of strategic pest control, to determine what animals are in what habitats. Students learnt to make their own chew cards and use them, and what traps to set for which predators. Being student leaders these young people will now take this knowledge back to their schools to inspire their classmates and teachers to take action for the environment.
As a side note, it was a delight to spend quality time in the beautiful regenerating forest that our community has created at Ōtokia Creek. It's worth taking a walk down Macintosh Road for a look over the fence 😊 We live in the BEST community πŸ’šπŸŒΏ

We need your help.
We're looking for a volunteer for a fortnightly check of possum, rat and stoat traps on the outskirts of Brighton.
The track is on private land.
About 2 hours every fortnight.
Would suit someone with moderate fitness. Well behaved dogs ok. Training and support provided.
This is one of our strategic lines that ring-fences part of the main Brighton predator control area.
Please send a DM or email Claudia at [email protected]

It was a pleasure to host Hagino from the DCC this morning. Hagino visits our community trapping group once a year to see what we're doing and what support we might need. She's the powerhouse behind the first aid classes, risk management courses, volunteer celebrations and other opportunities DCC offers to volunteers and coordinators. She even helped me bury a possum caught on the Piwakawaka trapline along the Ocean View Dunes. Thanks Hagino for everything you do! We appreciate you πŸŒΏπŸ¦πŸ™

Make trapping possums on your property a new year's resolution!

It's a great time to get in touch with us about our long-term trap loan programme.

If you have a lifestyle block/small farm in the greater Brighton area (check out the map for our project boundaries) - we can likely supply possum traps. We help you set them up and give you best practice trap training. In return you commit to doing weekly trap checks and recording your data.

Don't have much time but still want to get rid of predators from your land? We may be able to help by matching you up with a community volunteer to do the weekly trap checks for you.

🐧🐧 Little blue penguins are nesting along our rocky coast between Ocean View and Brighton! 🐧🐧

And the endemic variable oystercatchers currently have two chicks!

So we've installed a trap line against stoats, weasels and rats. We hope this helps make sure that the penguins can successfully raise their chicks, safe from predators.

Please don't interfere with the traps in any way. We've worked hard to get these traps here, and our trap checkers are all community volunteers who really care about protecting our native bird life.

Thank you 🌿❀️

Such a terrific morning for an advanced trapping workshop run by the amazing team at City Sanctuary. Claudia and Kim learned a lot of new tips to make trapping in our local community even more effective. Can't wait to share with our trappers!

Are you interested in trapping on your land?

Thanks to a generous donation of possum traps from the Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group, we can set up residents who have land anywhere between Kuri Bush and Westwood as trap hosts.

What we do: We supply the traps on long-term loan, help you set them up, and train you in their use and how to record catches. You become part of our trapping community (which includes things like potluck dinners and an active Whatsapp group for tips and feedback), and we give you long-term support.

What you do: Your commitment is to check, clear and rebait the traps once a week, and record your checks and catches. You'll have a lifestyle block (or bigger) with possum habitat on or adjacent to your land. You'll be able to host at least 3 tree-mounted possum traps spaced 100 m apart.

If you're keen to start trapping, send Claudia an email at [email protected] or send a message via Messenger. Make sure to say where you're located.

Pictured below are some wonderful locals we've set up with traps recently.

A HUUUUGE thank you to Otago Peninsula Biodiversity Group for donating traps to Brighton Trapping Project 😍

After years of Otago Peninsula residents and volunteers working tirelessly together to trap possums, OPBG are confident they've found the last of the possums living on the peninsula. What a phenomenal achievement! Of course, they're staying vigilant by monitoring for reinvading possums using hundreds of trail cams and other methods. AND they're super keen to work with community groups like ours to stop possums in their tracks before they get anywhere near the peninsula.

Because the OPBG no longer needs all their traps, they've kindly donated 50 Trapinators, 14 Timms traps and 20 baitsafes to us to use here in the Brighton and Ocean View area 🌿🐦 The equipment needs a bit of TLC after years of busting possums on the peninsula (we'll do that next month), and after that we'll start rolling them out.

If you're on the waiting list for traps for your lifestyle property, we'll be in touch soon. (If you don't hear from us, please send us a reminder!).

If you're new to our project and want to start trapping on your lifestyle block or farm, we'd LOVE to hear from you.
