Castledown's Wetlands

Castledown's Wetlands An exciting restoration project of existing wetlands in the Dipton area.
900 Dipton Mossburn Road, Castledowns

The wetland area encompasses 3.3ha of flaxland on the eastern side of the Dipton Stream, at the base of the forest owned by Rural Women NZ. Nine ponds were developed in 1970 to provide open water for wildlife and water for fire fighting purposes for the forest if needed. Apart from the stream, water enters the swamp land from several small creeks that exit the gullies from the hills to the east. A

High Value Area Survey was undertaken in 2012 as part of a Southland wide programme. This identified ecological values and ranked the wetland as ‘high’ significance. Access to the wetland area is through Allan and Janine Maxwell's farm. A sign on the gate at the roadside marks the entrance. We are very appreciative of the Maxwell's generosity in allowing this, please ensure gates are closed as you go though them. This restoration project is the creation of Rural Women NZ, who own the land, and is being coordinated by Dipton Landcare with assistance and advice from: Environment Southland, Rural Women NZ, Craigpine and Walking Access. Volunteers to implement projects and maintain the area are needed.

We’re excited to share the next steps for our wetland! The willows along the wetland margins are set to be removed soon (date to be confirmed), so we’ll need to take our traps out along the stream beforehand. Once the willows are gone, we’ll be planting the area with trees – some grown by Allan, but we’ll need many more! Our next volunteer day is on 24th August, but if the willow work happens earlier, we’d love some extra hands to help out. 🌱

Its that time again and unfortunately we have not had as many days this spring in the wetland because of the rain. If you are able to come and help w**d, cut back, and plant we would love to see you.

We will also have signs to put in around the area made by Alistair Jukes Adrian Irving and Anne McDermott. Please bring your lunch, afternoon tea to share and join us for the day at the wetland on the 900 Dipton Mossburn road. December 1st, 10.00 - 4pm.
