🇳🇿 A LITTLE REMINDER ABOUT THE REMEMBRANCE ARMY

Every week we receive messages from people all over New Zealand asking us to restore, repair or replace family graves.

We genuinely want to help where we can — but there is something important people need to understand:

The New Zealand Remembrance Army is powered by volunteers.

Nobody in our operational teams is sitting in an office being paid to answer messages, research graves or organise working bees.

Our people give their time freely.

They give up weekends.
They give up evenings.
They give up time with their families.
Some even take time away from work.

Across New Zealand, hundreds of volunteer hours can go into our work in a single weekend.

And because we value those people enormously, we also have to protect their time.

🔴 WHAT WE DO

Our volunteers undertake basic grave restoration — cleaning, painting lettering where appropriate, restoring service graves and helping preserve the stories of those who served.

🔴 WHAT WE DON'T DO

We are not a free grave repair service.

If a grave is broken, structurally damaged, needs major repairs or requires specialist work, it needs a professional stonemason.

We work with some excellent stonemasons around New Zealand, but their expertise, materials and time cost money.

🔴 UNMARKED GRAVES

We also work on unmarked graves — but again, we simply don't have the money to provide a new headstone for every unmarked family grave in New Zealand.

We concentrate our limited resources on cases where there is a strong historical or remembrance reason for us to become involved — particularly where someone who served New Zealand has effectively been forgotten.

If a family grave is unmarked simply because a headstone was never purchased, we unfortunately cannot automatically fund one.

We are a relatively small organisation achieving a huge amount because ordinary New Zealanders volunteer their time to do something extraordinary.

So when you contact us, please remember there isn't a paid workforce behind the page.

There are volunteers.

People with jobs. People with families. People with their own commitments.

And yet, week after week, they pull on an NZ Remembrance Army shirt, pick up the tools and head into cemeteries around New Zealand.

They do it for one reason: remembrance.

To every one of our volunteers — thank you.

Without you, there simply is no Remembrance Army.

🇳🇿🌺 We Will Remember Them.
