📣📣KIA HIWA RĀ! KIA HIWA RĀ! 📣📣

Kua whakakorengia te wānanga o te pō nei.
Unfortunately, tonight's wānanga has been cancelled.

See you next month on Friday 30 October!

11/09/2026

During our monthly wānanga, we’re learning waiata.

This waiata tangi was composed by Te Hirawanu Kaimokopuna for his son, Haereroa, who was killed in the Te Ruru battle at Ngātoto near Kumeroa.

The death of Haereroa in a house fire gave rise to the name of Ngāti Mutuahi - mutu = finished; ahi = fire.

The waiata tangi has laid dormant for too long.

The tune is “draggy” to give emphasis to the “haurangi” in the first line. Nowaday usage of “haurangi” refers to being intoxicated or drunk. In the context of the waiata and of that time, it is more dizziness, confusion.

Translation (by Te Rīaki)

Friends, I am at a loss
For I have partaken of the smoke that lingers nigh.
It is a northern cloud that sprinkles here.
You came from Ahuriri
From my hopes now dashed.
My great and exalted one,
Farewell to you and your elders
It was because of me you were scattered
And spread upon Takapau-wharanui,
Thrown and beaten. May you rest in peace.

✨RANGITĀNE TŪ MAI RĀ SETTLEMENT CELEBRATES 10 YEARS✨

Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā is celebrating ten years since it completed its historic Deed of Settlement with the Crown on 6 August 2016 at Mākirikiri Marae in Dannevirke.

“This is an important milestone for us” says Sonya Rīmene, Chair of Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā. “Our elders spent decades before the Waitangi Tribunal and negotiating with the Crown. We celebrate their achievements and reflect on our journey over the last ten years”.

“Our settlement was not perfect. We did not achieve all the things we aspired to in our negotiations with the Crown. However, it did mean that we could move from grievance mode to becoming masters of our own destiny” says Sonya Rīmene. “We have been able to grow our asset base, support our people and grow our connections and our presence in our community. There is much to celebrate”.

“Having reached this milestone, we can reflect on the ups and downs along the way and plan for our next decade of growth and development. We are committed to our whānau, we are committed to supporting the future of Wairarapa and Tamaki-nui-ā-Rua. We look forward with optimism”.

✨KA EKE TE WHAKATAUNGA TIRITI A RANGITĀNE TŪ MAI RĀ KI TE 10 TAU✨

Kei te whakanui a Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā i te tekau tau mai i te waitohutanga o tāna Puka Whakatau Tiriti me te Karauna i te 6 o Hereturikōkā 2016 i Mākirikiri Marae, Tamaki-nui-ā-Rua.

“He tūāoma nui tēnei ki a mātau” hei tā Sonya Rīmene, Heawahine o Rangitāne Tū Mai Rā. “I whakapau kaha ō mātau kaumātua mō te hia nei tau ki mua i Te Rōpū Whakamana i Te Tiriti o Waitangi me ngā whiriwhiringa kōrero ki te Karauna. Ka whakanui i ā rātau mahi, ka whai whakaaro ki te huarahi kua takahia i te tekau tau kua hori”.

“Kāore i mōwai rokiroki tā mātau whakataunga, kāore mātau i whakatutuki i ngā āhuatanga katoa i wawatatia. Heoi, nā te whakataunga ka huri te aro i te auē mō ngā nawe ki te whai i ngā huarahi e tūmanako ana mātau” e ai ki a Sonya Rīmene. “Kua taea e mātau te whakatipu te kaupapa rawa, te tautoko ō tātau whānau me te whakatipu hononga ki te hapori. He maha tonu ngā ekenga taumata hei whakanui”.

“Kua tae mātau ki tēnei tūāoma, ka titiro whakamuri ki ngā piki me ngā heke i te huarahi, ka whakamahere hoki i ngā whanaketanga hei whai ā te tekau tau kei mua i te aroaro. Kei te manawanui mātau ki ō tātau whānau, kei te manawaū anō hoki ki te whakapakari i te anamata o te Wairarapa me Tamaki-nui-ā-Rua. Tēnei mātau te ngākau rorotu ai ki te anamata”
