🌿 Dannevirke Community Garden Social Experiment Follow-Up
🌿

We’re feeling pretty pleased with the results of our little experiment: sticky tape vs aphids 🐛✨

What started as a simple trial in the maara kai has shown some really encouraging progress, and it’s been great to see how effective hands-on, low-intervention pest management can be 💚

The difference has been better than expected, and it’s given us a lot to think about for future pest management in the maara kai 🌱

It’s simple, it’s hands-on, and it’s working — and we’re pretty happy with that ✨

🌿 Dannevirke Community Garden Social Experiment 🌿
There’s always something interesting happening in the maara kai — this time we’ve been testing a simple old-school method: sticky tape vs aphids 🐛✨

Today we were out in the garden observing and trialling a hands-on way of managing pests without harsh sprays, just patience, close observation, and a bit of curiosity 💚

Today’s experiment involved:
🐜 Checking affected plants and identifying aphid hotspots
🪱 Carefully using sticky tape to lift aphids from stems and leaves
🌿 Observing plant health and how quickly pests return or reduce
📊 Noting what works (and what doesn’t!) as we go

It’s slow, detailed, slightly fiddly work… but it’s all about learning what actually helps in a real garden environment 🌱

Every small observation adds to our understanding, and every experiment helps us grow a healthier, more resilient maara kai ✨

Seed donations can be dropped off at the Dannevirke Library. Please include as much information as possible with your seeds.

Let’s grow something great together! 🌼🥕🌿

🌿 Maara Kai – First Turn of the Compost Piles! 🌿

There’s something deeply satisfying about opening them up and seeing the transformation already beginning. The layers of wet and dry materials we carefully built are now heating up, breaking down, and starting to become rich, living soil 🌱

Turning the piles helps:
🍂 Re-oxygenate the compost
🔥 Keep the heat active for faster breakdown
🌿 Mix materials evenly for a balanced, healthy result

It’s hands-on, earthy work — and a beautiful reminder that soil is alive and always working for us when we care for it 💚

From scraps and garden waste to future food-growing gold… the cycle continues ✨

🌿 Dannevirke Community Garden at the Market 🌿
Have you seen us at the Dannevirke The Dannevirke Market before? Have you purchased some fresh produce? We would love to hear what you think! 🥕✨

We’re there selling fresh, affordable produce grown right here in the maara kai — and it all feeds back into the same cycle of community growing 💚

What makes it special:
🥕 Fresh produce grown by local volunteers
💰 Affordable prices for our community
🔄 All profits go straight back into growing more food
🌱 A full circle system where everything stays in Dannevirke

It’s such an awesome setup — volunteers grow for Dannevirke, the market supports the garden, and the garden keeps growing for everyone 🌿✨

🌿 Maara Kai & Compost Station 🌿

There’s something pretty satisfying about building hot compost the old-fashioned way — layering, chopping, turning, and working together to turn “waste” into living soil ✨

Today at the compost station we were busy:
🍂 Layering wet and dry materials
✂️ Chopping everything down to help it break down faster
🔥 Building heat in the pile to create beautiful rich compost for the maara kai

It’s messy, physical, hands-on work… but this is where the magic happens 💚

Healthy soil grows healthy food, and every bucket of scraps, every armful of leaves, and every layer added helps close the loop back into the garden 🌱

When life gives you basil… make pesto 🌿✨

And this week it turned into something even better!

A huge thank you to one of our generous volunteers who arrived with a giant bowl of walnuts — the perfect addition to a very abundant basil harvest.

The result? A big batch of fresh, homemade pesto… and a jar of scrumptious goodness for each of our regular garden volunteers 💚

Nothing beats community, shared effort, and food made with love. Yummy 😋
