The Aldermen Islands above water is a nature reserve. New Zealand has submitted the Aldermen Islands to UNESCO as a World Heritage Site but it needs protection below water as well as above it. The Aldermen Islands is a unique underwater environment that rivals the Poor Knights Islands in Northland and is deserving in whole, or at least in part, of underwater protection as a marine reserve to preserve it, to also enhance adjacent coastal areas and will confer many other local benefits. The process in obtaining reserve status is lengthly, requires much consultation including with iwi and hapu and other affected interest groups. At present only 0.4% of New Zealand's seas have reserve status and if New Zealand is to become serious about conservation and management of its maritime resources this needs to be reviewed. NO BLUE - NO GREEN.
