The Aldermen Islands above water is a nature reserve. New Zealand has submitted the Aldermen Islands to UNESCO as a World Heritage Site but it needs protection below water as well as above it. The Aldermen Islands is a unique underwater environment that rivals the Poor Knights Islands in Northland and is deserving in whole, or at least in part, of underwater protection as a marine reserve to prese

rve it, to also enhance adjacent coastal areas and will confer many other local benefits. The process in obtaining reserve status is lengthly, requires much consultation including with iwi and hapu and other affected interest groups. At present only 0.4% of New Zealand's seas have reserve status and if New Zealand is to become serious about conservation and management of its maritime resources this needs to be reviewed. NO BLUE - NO GREEN.

With the Hauraki Gulf Bill passing through Parliament, it seems the southern half of Slipper Island and Penguin Islands are high protection areas where fishing is banned. Hahei Marine Reserve has been extended. An area north and to the south of the Aldermen Islands is also a high protection area where fishing is banned. Inshore Aldermen’s remain open and unchanged.

All unless of course you have traditional Maori rights or commercial fishing rights. Pity there is not one rule for all, if we are to seriously address over fishing.

It’s going to very hard to identify the Aldermen areas without a chart plotter.

In terms of the total sea area of the Gulf it is a very tiny area being newly protected.
