Running a hospital involves a lot more than most people see from the outside.

Every procedure we perform generates medical waste that has to be handled safely, compliantly, and responsibly. Over time, the cost becomes significant. We're deeply grateful to WasteCo, who collect and process our medical waste at no charge.

It's the kind of behind-the-scenes contribution that doesn't make headlines, but makes a genuine difference to what we're able to put back into patient care.

Volunteer Spotlight: Dr Jo Knight

Jo is a specialist gynaecologist with over two decades of clinical experience across the United Kingdom and New Zealand. She graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2001 and trained in obstetrics and gynaecology across the Mersey region before relocating to New Zealand in 2006. Jo is now working at Juno Women’s Health, a community based multidisciplinary clinic for all aspects of women’s health https://www.junowomenshealth.co.nz

Since becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) in 2018, Jo has held roles at some of New Zealand's leading women's health units including National Women's Health Auckland, Christchurch Women's Hospital, and several regional centres. At Christchurch Women's Hospital, she served as Lead Colposcopist for four years, guiding the unit through the transition to primary HPV screening

Since 2019, Jo has been the visiting gynaecologist at Canterbury Charity Hospital, providing free surgical and outpatient gynaecological care to women who cannot access public treatment and cannot afford private care. Her approach is compassionate, evidence-based, and deeply patient-centred which is exactly what our patients need and deserve.

This year so far has been amazing and we want to share it with you.

Thanks to a record number of volunteer clinicians joining our team, we're on track to perform more surgeries by the end of this year, compared to last. Every single one of those extra surgeries makes a life-changing impact for a real person, who will receive care they wouldn't otherwise be able to access.

Thank you to the extraordinary group of surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and specialists who choose to give their time to this community.

This is what we're here for.
