From our start in 2007 to delivering over 1,300 free appointments in 2025, our mission has never changed! We have helped thousands of people access the life-changing procedures they need, and it is all thanks to you. We work hard to ensure your donations make the biggest impact possible which is why 85 cents of every $1 you give goes directly to patient care. Thank you for helping us continue to provide the very best care for our community.

Volunteer Spotlight: Mr. Christopher Wakeman

Chris is one of the many expert general surgeons who volunteer their time at our Charity Hospital.

Working for the Christchurch hospitial surgical team since 2011, Chris also spends his time researching bowel cancer, serving as a medical advisor, and helping shape the next generation of medical practitioners as a lecturer at Otago University

Thank you Chris, for your world-class skills and your time to help the community.

We are incredibly grateful for the work Orion does behind the scenes to power the Canterbury Charity Hospital. Our CEO, Dr. Akshey Shukla, puts it pretty plainly: "Electricity keeps our theatre running, our diagnostic equipment working, and our patients safe."

Orion’s ongoing investment in strengthening Christchurch's electricity network against earthquakes and extreme weather means we have power we can continue to count on.

We’re proud to introduce another of our exceptional volunteers, Professor Frank Frizelle.

Frank brings an extraordinary depth of experience, leadership, and compassion to Canterbury Charity Hospital. Internationally recognised for his expertise in colorectal surgery, he is also a respected academic leader with longstanding ties to the University of Otago. His outstanding contribution to medicine has been acknowledged through numerous honours, including being appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

We are deeply grateful that surgeons of Frank’s calibre choose to give their time, skills, and knowledge to support our patients and help advance our mission of accessible healthcare for all.

Our charity has always been community-driven, and our beautifully maintained gardens are part of that. Our gardener, Rusty, has generously given his time for many years to tend to our grounds, ensuring our facilities are always well-kept, peaceful, and inviting.

If you'd like to help the Charity Hospital, jump onto our website and complete a volunteer application form. We're open to volunteers from all walks of life and all professions - if you'd like to help, we'd love to have you!

Over the next few months we'll be introducing some of our fantastic volunteers, starting with Mr Simon Richards.

Simon is a highly skilled Colorectal and General Surgeon. After completing his medical and surgical training in the South Island, he spent several years at top hospitals in Perth and Melbourne further developing his skills and specialties.

Simon generously takes time out from his practice at Christchurch Colorectal to provide his services to the Charity Hospital, and we're extremely fortunate to have him as part of the team.

It's thanks to volunteers like Simon that we can continue to provide life-changing medical care. To support us, head to https://loom.ly/sJIcnuQ

When people hear "charity hospital," the image that comes to mind isn't always glamorous! Because we're a community-funded, charitable organisation, people sometimes make negative assumptions about our facilities, team, or standard of care.

We're incredibly proud to offer the same modern facilities, patient-centred service, and medical expertise as any other hospital in the region. If you'd like to check us out, give the Reception team a call - we can arrange a time for you to pop in and tour our facilities.

It costs over $1 million a year to run the Canterbury Charity Hospital, and equipment is one of our most significant costs. It's also one of the most important: modern, well-maintained equipment makes life easier for our volunteers, and helps them provide top-notch patient care.
