Richmond Community Garden Richmond Community Garden is located at 235 River Road & Riverlution at 46a Vogel Street.
(1)

We support the local community by teaching self-sufficiency through growing veggies while having fun.
📅 Garden Days: Mon, Wed, 3rd Sat
🕙 Time: 10 am - 1 pm Richmond Community Garden
is located at 46a Vogel Street on the edge of the River Road Red Zone. For a few years, this mixed community garden has been neglected, The Earthquake in 2011 meant that the local community halved and volunteers mov

ed away or no longer had any interest in maintaining it. We believe with a well-established community garden, will help those in need in our community, (we are looking at selling the extra produce to raise funds) it will bring a community on the edge of the red zone new life, it will give an interest to those who wish to help. Over time we are looking to run classes to teach people who want to learn more about horticulture or gardening. We welcome volunteers to help create a beautiful veggie garden for our community to enjoy. To subscribe to our newsletter email: [email protected]

It's olive harvesting season! Do you have any olives in Ōtautahi and want to be part of Riverlution olive co-op? 🫒

If you've got an olive tree (or a few) and want to be part of the co-op, please drop your olives at Riverlution Eco Hub (46A Vogel Street, Richmond) before 5pm this Sunday 14th June. You’ll get some oil in return and help us make the most of the short harvest window.

Our volunteers have been busy picking as many trees as they can around the community. If we haven't reached you yet - please can you try and pick your olives and drop them in. Ngā mihi (thank you) 🌿

Any questions, please email [email protected]

Last week we welcomed students from Medbury School to Richmond Community Garden - what a day we had!

A huge group of over 160 students and teachers joined us for a day of hands on mahi (work) in the garden. 🙌

The students got involved in so many parts of the garden, just to name a few:
🌿 Preparing the garden for a special Matariki planting, creating a beautiful native planting space - ready for our planting in July.
🌳 Weeding and mulching the food forest and native forest areas
🍄 Preparing the ground at the fungi farm for our next fungi whānau event
🏞️ Preparing the 1,247 bottles pulled from the Avon-Ōtākaro River to be transformed into an art piece sculpture - watch this space for the finished version 👀

It was awesome to see so much energy, teamwork, and care for the whenua (land) throughout the day.

A special ngā mihi nui to the Avon-Ōtākaro Network for all your mahi, and for providing the trailer (and sausages) in support of the day 💚

We had an amazing morning weeding, planting, composting and mulching our Vogel Street entrance.

Connections were made with old and new volunteers, finishing with a well deserved cuppa and kai. Thank you Julie Crook for bringing the sasuage rolls. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who came along it was very satisfying to get that job done, ready for our new bike stands. 🚲

🌿✨ What a day of community magic! ✨🌿
Today we welcomed not ONE, but TWO amazing UniLodge groups, students from the University of Canterbury living in UniLodge accommodation, showing up to give back to the community in the best way possible 💚
Together, we got stuck in at Fungi Farm 🍄
🌱 Prepped garden beds ready to winter over
🌿 Cleared a massive mulch pile (hello future green space, a DOME perhaps!)
🪵 Shifted fresh logs for our Monthly Fungi Whānau at Fungi Farm 🍄 gatherings
🌳 Planted native species to help stabilise our bank — huge thanks to Trees For Canterbury for their generous plant donation 🙌
It’s honestly something special to witness, people coming together, getting their hands dirty, sharing laughs, and creating spaces that everyone can enjoy 🌏✨
We are so grateful for the partnerships and volunteers who make this mahi possible. This is what thriving, connected, sustainable communities look like 💫
Ngā mihi nui to everyone involved 💚

Mā te wā - see you later Eileen 👋🌱💚

Over the past three months, we’ve had the pleasure of working with our Crisis Readiness & Community Resilience Intern, Eileen.

Eileen jumped right in, exploring waste management and plastic recycling with our Precious Plastics project, while also getting hands-on with facility management. She also played a role in getting our solar panels on the Riverlution Eco Hub & Café up and running. Ka pai (well done)👏☀️

She also supported the initial stages of creating Riverlution's internal emergency response preparedness plan for potential events like earthquakes and tsunamis, an important piece of ongoing mahi (work) that creates resilient communities in Ōtautahi.

Thank you, Eileen, for your energy, curiosity, and all the effort you brought to the tīma (team). We’ve loved having you with us and can’t wait to see where your journey takes you next 💚

Just a reminder our Riverlution Eco Hub is closed for ANZAC weekend. However, the garden never closes so our regular Monday gardening session is on from 10am-1pm and the gardens are open for you all to enjoy 👏👩‍🌾🌱

Today was one of those truly special days that reminds us what community is all about.

Our incredible trustees (current and former) and volunteers came together for a big day of mahi, hauling mulch and pea straw, preparing to tuck our garden beds in for the winter ahead. There’s something deeply satisfying about caring for the whenua like this, knowing it will rest and regenerate ready for another abundant season 🌱

A huge thank you to the Lions Club of New Brighton - New Zealand for generously delivering the pea straw as part of their annual fundraiser, your support makes such a difference.

We also took a moment to honour someone very dear to us. We installed a beautiful art piece in memory of our Patron Trisha, who we lost just before Christmas. Her gumboots now stand as part of the piece, alongside flowers crafted from keys salvaged from homes once standing in the corridor. It’s a powerful tribute, full of story, loss, and transformation, and a reminder that she remains woven into this place 💛

And as if that wasn’t enough, the whole space was absolutely humming, the café was pumping, the 🥕 Riverlution Farmers Market 🥬 was alive with incredible local vendors, and the Riverlution parkrun saw a record number of runners.

Days like this are what it’s all about. Community, connection, remembrance, and abundance.

We hope we have done both our beloved and recently departed Trisha's proud.
