It's election year and we know the stakes: Te Tiriti justice, turning away from privatisation of our public sector and environment, workers' rights and labour protections.

To do our part, ASTR Pōneke is hosting an enrolment party. 🎉

All are welcome, as we take the time to check our own enrolment details and reach out to at least FIVE of our friends and family to see if they're enrolled and ready to vote! We'll also start with a discussion and mini training on how to have enrolment and voting conversations so we feel ready and equipped for this election year.

Each one of us holds trusted relationships with people in our families, communities and workplaces. Collectively, we have the power to enrol hundreds, if not thousands, of potential voters if we start now. We hope to see you there!

Please join us for a screening of Pesta Babi aka “Pig Feast: Colonialism in Our Time”, a fascinating new investigative documentary examining contemporary colonialism, militarisation, and large‑scale development projects in West Papua.

The film follows Indigenous communities in Merauke whose forests and ancestral lands are being transformed into vast industrial plantations under state-backed “food security” and energy projects, forcing people from their homes, away from traditional food sources, and into poverty and starvation.

Recent weeks have seen renewed violence and repression in Papua, including the disappearance and coercion of Mama Yasinta, a prominent West Papuan activist and one of the film’s key protagonists, as well as escalating state violence. Many of the screenings in Indonesia have been stopped by the military, which has been unleashed since Prabowo Subianto assumed the presidency in 2024.

At some point as a society we need to mature enough to stop pretending like racism can be just some charming little quirk of an individual and just call it out with the seriousness it requires.

After telling Green MP Lawrence Xu-Nan to “go back to your own country”, Raybon Kan has recalled Winston Peters once said essentially the same thing to him almost 30 years ago.

Raybon Kan was born in Masterton.

When the same racist line keeps appearing across decades, it’s not a slip of the tongue. It’s a pattern.

And somehow, in 2026 New Zealand has a govt and a leader that seems happy to tolerate that on a world stage.
That should embarrass every one of us.

We will provide craft supplies, though feel free to bring your own (extra scissors etc.) plus any specific printouts you want.
