✂️In this collage and badge making workshop, we'll create small collage artworks to be made into 25mm or 35mm badges. Wear your badges around town or at your next action!

We will provide craft supplies, though feel free to bring your own (extra scissors etc.) plus any specific printouts you want.

🍇Light kai, kawhe and tī will be provided. (Vegan, GF and Nut-free options available)

This will be a decolonial, feminist, anti-racist, and anti-transphobic space.

An excerpt from ASTR Pōneke’s speech at a rally against US and Israeli imperialism earlier this month!

“As ASTR, our work in Aotearoa is intrinsically tied to the work of supporting Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination everywhere. We stand against this war, against the American and Zionist imperial war machine, in support of the Iranian movement for “women, life and freedom”, and in solidarity with the Iranian, Lebanese, Palestinian, and Cuban people to determine their own future, free from war and tyranny, Western imperialism and authoritarianism.“

As ASTR marks 10 years, we’ve been taking time to sit with the conversations that have shaped our organising including the kōrero shared in our anniversary webinar about the histories we stand in and the political terrain we’re navigating now. Those discussions reminded us that our movement didn’t appear out of nowhere; it grew through relationships, accountability, and a refusal to let others define our place in Te Tiriti conversations.

This anniversary piece with The Spinoff comes out of that wider reflection. It traces the whakapapa of ASTR the people, movements, and moments that shaped us and the commitments that continue to guide our work across the motu.

A decade after a single Waitangi banner, Asians Supporting Tino Rangatiratanga has become a national movement – and a challenge to how te Tiriti is framed in Aotearoa.

This comic by ASTR founding member MZ beautifully captures Matike Mai values: an inclusive vision where everyone would have a sense of belonging and community.

As they wrote: "Right now, political and economic decisions are made based on the values of profit, extraction, and private property – these are all values of neoliberal capitalism made explicit in the Regulatory Standards Bill. These values attack the foundations of our existence, turning land to commodity, and reducing our value as people to our labour.

The deeper I engage with Matike Mai, the more I realise how it offers more than just visions and values for the future, it also offers practices and strategies we can use now to build towards that future."
