TOP OF THE WORLD TO YOU

Where it all started.

In November 2023 horse riders rode Mt Grey Maukatere in North Canterbury for the first time. This public conservation land has a small easement that must be crossed, and it is managed by Rayonier Matariki Forests.

For horse riders to gain permission to ride the mountain, a group needed to be established in order to hold the $3-million public liability insurance.

That group is called Equestrian’s Advocacy - Canterbury/ West Coast. Each ride must be a managed trek, with radio comms, a key to a locked gate and we have permission to ride 4 times a year.

I have taken that responsibility on and do appreciate the group’s committee support for funds raised to be donated to the New Zealand Vulnerable Road User Charitable Trust.

💛 💚 RAGS TO RICHES - DOLLARS DO HELP TO OPEN DOORS 💛 💚

I’m used to working on the smell of an oily rag. I worked in radio news! Creating content, writing, engaging with professionals - I can do without funds.

For example, the New Zealand Police road safety campaign you saw over Road Safety Week, that was filmed off my phone and scripted by me. It worked - thank goodness.

But the New Zealand Vulnerable Road User Charitable Trust has reached the next stage of its growth.

It’s time to back ourselves and attend networking opportunities. For example there’s a trucking operator conference coming up - $75 a ticket - down the road - I’d like to attend. The Trust has no funds.

💚 HOW BEST TO ASK FOR HELP? 💚

The New Zealand Vulnerable Road User Charitable Trust is eight months old and when you’re new, you have a lot to prove to prospective funders.

Then there’s the fact it’s hard to measure or prove your efforts are having a positive effect in community. And the cost of living crisis means demand exceeds available funds!

So, I find myself in a position where I’m asking for help.

💚 JOINT ROAD SAFETY MESSAGING 💚

Two years ago there was little to no road safety messaging for horse riders in New Zealand.

You can imagine my surprise when NZ Trucking Association CE David Boyce and Carol McGeady offered to collaborate with the NZVRU Trust to create targeted road safety messaging for vulnerable road users.

We hope to have school children participate too.

Thank you to Canterbury Police who have agreed to support by way of on-road safety.

💚 VRU ROAD SAFETY LANDSCAPE IS CHANGING 💚

It’s happening.

Investing in relationships. Building credibility. Doing the mahi day in and day out.

Now the NZVRU Trust has been presented with an opportunity to produce road safety messaging with the trucking sectors biggest champion for road safety improvement.

What a pleasure it was to sit down with NZ Trucking Association chief executive David Boyce to discuss how the Trust’s road safety videos can be included in its Road Safety Truck programme, rolled out to schools and future career drivers.

💚 A HAPPY HORSE IS A SAFE HORSE 💚

Extra care is required when approaching and passing a horse on the road.

✅ slow down in either direction, and be prepared to stop suddenly
✅ give 2m or more space
✅ follow a rider’s hand signals
✅ do not toot
✅ do not rev your engine
✅ be mindful of noisey trailers/ vehicles as you pass

We will wave and thank you if we are able to. You will certainly see a smile.
