Another fantastic and engaging night at Cathedral city Toastmasters! 🏆🎤

Last night, we dove headfirst into a brilliant theme: "Court of Public Opinion" 🏛️🗣️. We tackled some fiercely debated topics, including whether pineapple belongs on pizza 🍍🍕 and if chess is truly a sport ♟️🤔!

A few highlights from the evening:

📖 Word of the Day: Defeat – which was thoroughly and cleverly used by members throughout the meeting.

✨ Wonderful Icebreaker: Huge congratulations to Yun Yun for a stellar icebreaker speech! It was wonderful hearing about her background and her hometown of Chengdu 🐼🇨🇳.

💡 Mastering the Craft: Jessica shared incredible insights as part of the Better Speaker Series, breaking down "How to prepare & practise a speech" 📋📈.

🎀 Meaningful Table Topics: Jo led an meaningful session focused on Breast Cancer Awareness Month, sharing important information and prompting thoughtful, interesting questions 🤔❓.

A massive thank you to everyone who stepped up, shared their stories, and supported one another. ❤️

What a fantastic and fun-filled evening we had at Cathedral city Toastmasters last night!

Opening Energy: Angelique and Grace set a brilliant tone by reading out the Toastmasters promise with fantastic enthusiasm.

Grammar & Words: Yen Yen kept us sharp as Grammarian, introducing "flourish" as our Word of the Day.

Powerful Speeches: Shanuka delivered a stellar 2nd speech from Presentation Mastery, while Fiona impressed us with her Level 2 speech on body language, showing the true power of perseverance even with cue cards!

Table Topics & Theme: Feng led the evening with a fun theme on "How to survive in socially awkward meetings," followed by a money-themed Table Topics session 💰 where we learned who our resident shopaholics and ultra-frugal members really are!

👋 The Warm Welcome: From the moment you walk through the door, you’ll be greeted warmly by our members. No pressure, no spotlight—just a friendly chat to help you settle in.

🎙️ How the Night Flows:The Toastmaster of the Evening: The meeting is guided smoothly by an assigned host who keeps the energy high and the agenda moving.

Prepared Speeches: Members deliver speeches they've carefully crafted based on their personal communication goals.

Table Topics (Impromptu Speeches): This is where the fun happens! We practice thinking on our feet with short, low-pressure impromptu topics. As a guest, you’ll be given a gentle, optional chance to stand up and introduce yourself or take part if you'd like to try. (Zero obligation, but it's a great rush!)

Tea, Coffee & Chat: Halfway through, we break for a cuppa, some bikkies, and a chance to mingle.Evaluations:

Constructive feedback is the secret sauce of Toastmasters. We wrap up by hearing encouraging evaluations of the evening's speeches.

🌟 Another Incredible Night at Cathedral City Toastmasters! 🌟
Last night was filled with rich culture, milestones, and brilliant firsts!

Kiwi Connections: Diane led our meeting brilliantly as Toastmaster of the Day, guiding us through a fun exploration of Kiwi words. 🥝

Powerful Speeches: We heard from Kahu with a deeply moving speech titled "Ka kite, haere rā" about his Toastmasters journey, and celebrated a major milestone as Jane completed her entire Presentation Mastery Pathway, reflecting on a lifetime of speeches! 🎉

Memorable Table Topics: Shanuka absolutely crushed his very first time in the role of Table Topics Master, keeping us on our toes with a heartwarming theme of "memories." 💭

Growing Our Family: A huge and warm welcome to our 2 new members, Angelique and Narmadhaa! We are thrilled to have you join our club community. 🤝

Cathedral city Toastmasters Recap 🌿✨

We had a wonderful evening celebrating Māori Language Week with our Word of the Day: Pō mārie (peaceful night)!

Richard kept the meeting ticking along as Toastmaster, kicking things off with a few laughs about some unfortunate encounters with street scammers (including a memorable shoe shiner in Istanbul).

Here is how the rest of the night unfolded:

Inspiring Speeches: Justine took us on a fascinating journey back to what life was like in Christchurch 100 years ago, while Fiona shared a thought-provoking reflection on the challenges of always saying "maybe."

Garden-Themed Table Topics: Run brilliantly by Jane, our impromptu session featured the highs and lows of gardening—from surprise talents in growing lemons to a love for coconut trees.

Welcoming Our Guests: A huge welcome to Angelique, Roshni, and Narmadhaa! After years of thinking about checking out Toastmasters, they finally stepped through the door. Their stories about the nerves of public speaking sounded so familiar to everyone in the room. They definitely came to the right place, and we hope to see them back soon!

🕵️‍♂️ Street Smarts vs. Con Artists: Scammers Be Scamming!
From classic shell games and sleight-of-hand tricks to smooth-talking street hustles, con artists have been finding clever ways to separate people from their wallets for centuries. This Tuesday night, we’re taking a look at the world of street scams—how they operate, and the few times Richard has been seperated from his cash!

Richard will be guiding us through the evening as our Toastmaster, leading a night dedicated to the theme "Scammers Be Scamming."

What’s on the agenda?

Prepared Speeches: We’ll enjoy talks from our speakers Justine and Fiona.

Table Topics: Get ready for some fun, fast-paced impromptu speaking hosted by Jane.

Supper & Evaluations: After a short break to catch up, and enjoy a cuppa, we’ll reconvene for constructive evaluations—where our speakers get valuable feedback to help them grow and refine their craft.

Whether you're looking to build your public speaking confidence, conquer stage fright, or just join a supportive, growth-focused group, we’d love to see you there.

It was another fantastic night at Toastmasters this evening. Jason took on the Toastmaster role for the first time and absolutely smashed it. His theme—“All the jobs I’ve had”—His memorable jobs include teenage pumpkin farmer to lumberjack in Canada!

Feng delivered his first Grammarian role with real "aplomb" (his word of the day), and our three speakers shone: Fiona spoke about why she is excited to move to the city, Jane delivered a speech on SMART goal setting, and Richard on being an “extraverted introvert.” They were all interesting and enjoyable.

Jessica’s Table Topics drew on the Chinese New Year (today)—the Year of the Fire Horse—highlighting themes of ambition, courage, and thoughtful, confident choices. It inspired some really warm and reflective responses.

An excellent evening all round. Guests are always welcome any Tuesday evening.
