Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sport are excited to invite mātua, kaumātua, older adults to our first SuperGold Tuesday at Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, a special active ageing event designed to help people move, connect and discover new recreation opportunities.

On Tuesday 20 October from 10am-2.30pm, mātua, kaumātua, older adults are invited to come along and try something new, with activities including Zumba Gold, badminton, aqua jogging and fitness, walking netball, walking basketball, pickleball, dance tasters, gentle exercise, yoga/pilates, circus, diving, water polo, hydroslides, SwimSmart sessions, and more. With a $6 entry fee paid on arrival at reception, it’s an affordable way to explore a range of activities, meet new people and discover different ways to keep active at Parakiore.

Burnside Elim Church is celebrating its seventieth anniversary in 2026.

Beginning in rented premises in 1956, the church eventually established its home at 193 Grahams Road and has continued to grow and change alongside the Burnside community. Its story also includes a fascinating connection to the beginnings of Christian broadcasting in New Zealand.

Today, the church offers a range of activities for the wider community, including gentle exercise classes for seniors, English-language classes, preschool play sessions, and ukulele classes. Plans are also underway to redevelop its facilities so it can continue serving the community for generations to come.

UC students help BBCN look to the future

Over the past couple of months, BBCN has had the pleasure of working alongside University of Canterbury PACE students Olivia Auld and Nitimai Cakau.

Olivia explored community participation, inclusion, and connection, while Nitimai looked at BBCN’s future role, structure, and sustainability. Together, their work has provided valuable insights and practical recommendations to help inform BBCN’s future planning.

🌱 Looking for something fun and free to do during the school holidays?

Come along to the Nepal Reserve Community Planting Day and help us plant 1,800 native plants.

Thursday 1 October
Drop in anytime between 10 am and 1 pm
Nepal Reserve—off Westpark Drive, Burnside
Join Christchurch City Council’s Urban Forest team and Community Park Rangers, FENZ, and the Friends of Crosbie Park. Learn about fire-smart planting and enjoy a free sausage sizzle once the planting is finished.

Everyone is welcome, and no experience is needed. Tools and gloves will be available, but please bring your own if you have them, along with a drink bottle, sturdy shoes, and weather-ready clothing.

The event will go ahead whatever the weather.

Free community sewing skills drop-in

Learn practical sewing skills to mend or alter clothes or make something for yourself and your whānau.

Run by the community, for the community, with support from Fendalton Library, this free weekly drop-in is a friendly opportunity to learn how to use a sewing machine, build your confidence or get advice on a sewing project.

Beginners are welcome, and basic materials are provided. Feel free to bring your own materials or a sewing project you’d like help with.
