Did you know?

When you first walk into Christchurch Community House, one of the first things you notice is our beautiful wooden staircase.

But there's another feature of our building that is just as important.

Behind this door is our elevator!

Accessibility is about making sure everyone has the opportunity to feel welcome, included, and able to participate.

Whether someone has limited mobility, a disability, an injury or needs a little extra support, having accessible options can make a real difference.

As a community hub for not-for-profit organisations, community groups and people working to make a positive impact across Ōtautahi Christchurch, we believe everyone should feel welcome in our space.

Accessibility is about more than just getting from one floor to another. It's about removing barriers, supporting different needs and making it easier for people to connect, collaborate and contribute to their communities.

Sometimes, it's the little things that make the biggest difference.

Feel free to use the elevator when you come to see us next.

It was a pleasure to welcome Eden Skipper - Opportunity Candidate for Christchurch Central to Christchurch Community House yesterday.

Eden spent time meeting with some of our tenants, hearing about the incredible work happening across the House, and learning more about the positive impact our community organisations have every day.

We love opportunities like this to showcase the amazing mahi taking place under one roof and to connect decision-makers with the people and organisations making a real difference in our community.

Thank you, Eden, for taking the time to visit and for your genuine interest in the work of our tenants and the communities they serve.

Did you know we have a garden indoors at Christchurch Community House?

You might walk past it every day without really stopping to notice it.

Tucked alongside our stairs, our indoor garden brings a little bit of the outdoors inside, creating a welcoming space for the many people and organisations who come through Christchurch Community House.

And there’s more care behind it than you might realise.

Stephen takes extra time to look after the gardens, making sure everything is healthy, tidy and looking its best. Even the little details, like keeping the leaves neatly trimmed along the stairs, are part of that care.

At Christchurch Community House, we believe the little things matter.

We’re home to a range of community organisations, charities and not-for-profits, providing spaces where people can work, meet, connect, share ideas and make a difference in our community.

So creating a welcoming environment matters too.

It’s not just about the offices, meeting rooms or facilities. It’s about creating a place where people feel comfortable, connected and welcome when they walk through the door.

🌿 A little bit of nature indoors.
🤝 A place for community to come together.
💚 And lots of little details that help make Christchurch Community House feel like home.

Next time you’re here, take a moment to look around. You might notice something you’ve never spotted before!

📸 A little note about this photo:
We’ve lightly edited the image to keep the focus on our indoor garden and the details we wanted to share. We’ve also removed some surrounding areas of the building to respect the privacy of the people and organisations who use Christchurch Community House.

We're proud to share that Christchurch Community House has been featured as a pro bono partner in Simpson Grierson's 2026 Invested for Good Pro Bono Report.

We often talk about the importance of collaboration in the community sector, and Simpson Grierson is a fantastic example of what that looks like in practice. Their support has provided us with valuable expertise and advice, but just as importantly, they have taken the time to understand who we are, what we do, and the communities we serve.

We are incredibly grateful for their ongoing support and for the wider contribution they make to community organisations throughout Aotearoa.

Thank you, Simpson Grierson, for helping organisations like ours create stronger outcomes for our communities.

🤟 There are so many ways to say “hello”, “thank you”, “I’m here” and “I understand.”

Today we’re celebrating International Day of Sign Language and the many different ways people communicate and connect with one another.

In Aotearoa, New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) is one of our official languages and an important part of our community.

For some people, signing is their everyday way of communicating. For others, learning even a few simple signs can be a small but meaningful way to make someone feel welcome.

And that's what community is about: making room for everyone.️

Here at Christchurch Community House, we see every day how much can happen when people, organisations and communities come together.

Different voices.
Different experiences.
Different ways of communicating.

But one shared community.

Today, we're celebrating the people who help make Ōtautahi a more connected and inclusive place and reminding ourselves that communication really is for everyone.

🤟 Happy International Day of Sign Languages!

A meeting room with a pretty impressive view!

Where you meet matters.

The space you meet in can shape how people feel when they walk through the door. We want our spaces to foster better conversations, new ideas, and meaningful connections.

At Christchurch Community House, we’re proud to offer welcoming, practical meeting and interview spaces in central Christchurch, available to businesses, not-for-profits, community groups and individuals.

Whether you’re:
Meeting with a client
Bringing your team together
Holding an important conversation
Interviewing someone
Working on a community initiative

We have a space for you!

And when you take a break and look outside, you’ll get a pretty special view of Ōtautahi Christchurch, including views towards the new Christchurch Stadium.

A little reminder that our city is always changing, growing and creating new possibilities.

But booking a room at Christchurch Community House is about more than simply finding somewhere to meet.

Your booking helps support our wider work to strengthen connection and social impact across our community.

So when you meet here, you’re helping contribute to something bigger, creating opportunities for people, organisations and community groups to connect, collaborate and make a difference.

Location📍: Christchurch Community House

“Ko au te whenua, ko te whenua ko au.”

I am the land, and the land is me

There’s something powerful about the relationship we have with the places we call home.

For Christchurch Community House, this whakataukī captures something at the heart of community: belonging.

We’re shaped by the places we live, the people we meet, the stories we share and the communities we contribute to.

Here in Ōtautahi Christchurch, our landscape is a constant reminder of that connection - the Port Hills, the Canterbury Plains, the Ōtākaro Avon River and the people who make this city what it is.

Community isn't simply about being in the same place.

It's about feeling connected to that place and to each other.

It’s about creating spaces where people feel welcomed, valued, and that they belong.

That’s what makes a community more than just a collection of people.

It makes it home.

What does belonging to a place mean to you?

This week, we’re celebrating te reo Māori and reflecting on some of the wisdom held within whakataukī.

One whakataukī that we love is: "Whāia te iti kahurangi, ki te tūohu koe, me he maunga teitei".

Seek the treasure you value most dearly; if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.

It’s a beautiful reminder to aim high and stay committed to the things that matter most.

At Christchurch Community House, we see this every day.

We see people and organisations working hard to support others, create opportunities and make a difference in our community.

We know the journey isn't always easy.

There are challenges, setbacks and days when the mountain ahead can feel pretty big.

But the important work continues.

People keep showing up.

They keep supporting one another.

They keep working towards something bigger.

That’s what community is about. ❤

Whāia te iti kahurangi - keep reaching for what matters.

What is the mountain you're working towards?

Thirty-six years ago, this building was just an idea!

Today, it's home to dozens of non-profits doing real work for Christchurch, and none of it would exist without the people who backed us along the way.

Catalytic Foundation Community Organisations Grant Scheme (COGS). Department of Internal Affairs Lottery Grants. Christchurch City Council Rātā Foundation Christchurch Casino And many more.

Every one of them chose to invest in something that doesn't always get headlines: the quiet, everyday work of community organisations trying to make Ōtautahi better.

Because of them, a small charity can afford an office. A new social enterprise can book a meeting room without stretching its budget. A team can grow instead of just surviving.

That's not a small thing. That's the difference between an idea and an organisation that actually gets to exist.

So today, we just want to say it out loud: thank you. Truly.
