New Zealand Sign & Display Association (Incorporated)

New Zealand Sign & Display Association (Incorporated) For over 60 years we have been the Official Association for the NZ Sign Industry!

Advocating for members and promoting excellence in craftsmanship in a safe, friendly, and fun environment. The flagship event for the New Zealand Sign and Display Association is the annual New Zealand Sign and Display Awards. This prestigious national competition, which recognises outstanding design and craftsmanship across a broad range of signmaking methods and technologies, receives hundreds of entries each year from all over New Zealand. To acknowledge excellence is the primary purpose of the New Zealand Sign and Display Awards. This maxim not only constitutes part of the awards programme logo, but also provides the standard by which all entries are judged. This ensures that the overall standard of entries is high and that competition for the gold, silver or bronze medals is fierce. Sponsored by many of New Zealand’s leading signs and graphics suppliers, the annual awards dinner and prize giving is held in different cities throughout New Zealand reinforcing the events national status. Members are kept up to date on government legislation issues such as the Employment Relations Act, The Health and Safety in Employment Act, the Privacy Act, the Resource Management Act, the Fair Trading Act, the Commerce Act, and the Consumer Guarantees Act, among others. Updates and court findings affecting the application of these various laws are of paramount importance. The Association, with the assistance of its local members, keeps a particularly close watch on Local Body Legislation and local by-laws in town or district planning, as rules concerning sign usage increase. A town planning consultant is employed by the Association to represent the industry at legislative hearings, challenging ill-considered rules.

We’d like to give a shout-out to Aaron Joines from Alternative Graphics and Design, who has taken on the goal of running the NZSDA’s biggest regional meeting!

Tonight, 51 sign makers will get together in the Bay of Plenty for an epic quiz night. Aaron has put in a huge amount of work to bring everyone together, and we really appreciate the time and effort he’s put into making it happen.

Want to see something similar in your area? Put your hand up to host an event! We’ll work alongside you and provide the support and resources to make it happen. We’d love to see more members like Aaron putting their hands up to connect their local communities.

🏆 Can you complete this Young Signee of the Year challenge in 25 minutes?

At this year's Expo, we introduced the Young Signee of the Year Competition, putting competitors' skills and knowledge to the test through a series of challenges.

One of these challenges involved the updated Sign Industry Pricing Guide. Competitors had 25 minutes to calculate the hourly charge-out rate for a fictitious sign company, testing their understanding of business costs and commercial thinking.

Despite the noisy environment and time pressure, the contestants did a great job!

💪 Think you could do it? Grab your Sign Industry Pricing Guide, set a timer for 25 minutes and see if you can complete the challenge. You can also use it as a great training exercise for your staff!

Best practice provides a solid foundation, but sometimes it can become a safety net that limits our thinking and hampers creativity.

Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn't mean it's always the best approach. As technology evolves, it's worth questioning whether our tried-and-tested methods still have the best results. 💡

The Design for Signwriting speaker session at this year's Sign & Print Expo explored this very topic. You can watch the full video on our website here:

SIGN NETWORK LIMITED was one of the original 19 sign shops to achieve Master Sign Maker accreditation when it was introduced in 2017.

For them, it was a way to show customers that their business had been independently assessed and met a recognised standard of professionalism, from workmanship through to business practices.

In this article, Scott Walklin, director of Sign Network and a driving force behind the updated accreditation pathway, shares what Master Sign Maker means to him and what the future of the accreditation looks like.

🌿 Te Wiki o te Reo Māori - This week is Māori language week. The 2026 focus, Te Reo Towns, celebrates the communities that have kept te reo Māori alive and encourages people across New Zealand to help it flourish into the future.

From street signs and business signage to public spaces and community buildings, signage plays a big part in making te reo Māori visible in our towns and everyday lives.

As sign makers, communication is at the heart of what you do, and with many sign projects incorporating te reo Māori, it’s helpful to understand some of the basics. Why not give it a try?

Here are a few signage-related words to start with:

Sign = Tohu
Design = Hoahoa
Install = Tāuta
Make, Build, Create = Hanga
Resources, Materials = Rauemi
Set in Place = Tū

Over the years we’ve heard pretty much every excuse for why businesses haven't joined the NZSDA, and we like to think we have a pretty good comeback for all of them at this point!

“We’re trying to cut costs right now.”

Times are tough and every business has plenty of things competing for the budget. But when you consider the resources, business support, industry connections, mentorship and opportunities that come with NZSDA membership, there’s a lot of value packed into a small annual fee. Not to mention the access to savings through n3, which have saved our members more than the cost of their membership over the last 12 months!

This month there’s even less reason to hold off, because we’re waiving the $85 application fee for new members! Simply apply before 30 September and use the code FREESEPT.
