When her doctor said the word cancer, Victoria Ashworth heard nothing else in the room. She'd lived alongside cancer before, having lost her first husband to the disease within weeks of his diagnosis.

In 2017, despite keeping up with her mammograms, Victoria was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer. Chemotherapy was intense, and she later had a double mastectomy and radiation.

When her cancer returned, she didn't want to face it alone again. Through the Cancer Society, Lisia became her first point of call, someone to talk to about the things she didn't always want to put on her husband.

"They're only a phone call away," Victoria says. "I wish I knew that the first time around, but I know that now."

When Carl was diagnosed with prostate cancer in November 2024, he was also carrying the deep grief of losing Carolyn, his partner of 18 years, to leukaemia just a year earlier. With his daughters in Australia and no close family nearby, he was getting through each day alone.

Carl rang the 0800 CANCER helpline and was connected with Fleur, a Cancer Society cancer navigator. She called, then visited for coffee, helping him access counselling, transport support, rural clinics and more.

"From having nobody, to have somebody who was really bothered and concerned, who you could talk to. It was wonderful," Carl says.

Today, Carl volunteers with the Cancer Society himself, helping the next person feel less alone.

When Amber was diagnosed with stage 3C1 cervical cancer last year, at 31, she faced eleven weeks of chemotherapy and months of treatment through Christmas and New Year.

Alongside her family and closest friends, one steady presence made a real difference: Tracey, a Cancer Society nurse, who called Amber every Wednesday to check in.

"It really helped to take that weight off your shoulders," Amber says. "You didn't realise you were holding those feelings inside, and once you started talking to someone, it really made you relax a lot more."

For Tracey, that check-in call is a small but meaningful part of the support the Cancer Society provides. "I am in the background if they need anything," she says. "It provides them with another layer of support."

This Daffodil Day, they’re part of our hero image alongside one of our local Cancer Society team Community Manager Tara Strahan, to show that the people in our campaigns are real people, and the support Cancer Society provides is real too.
