Podcast: Homelessness may not always be obvious or visible for youth - it may look like couch surfing, emergency housing or an unsafe environment.

Some of our young tenants may have never experienced long term stable housing, missing out on a caring home life and experiences many of us may take for granted.

Every young person deserves the chance to have a safe place to call home and the support they need to build a positive future.

Eighteen months after opening, we’re proud to share the impact our youth housing is making for young people at risk of homelessness. Managed by the wonderful team at Christchurch Methodist Mission (CMM), the service provides a safe and supportive home for 22 young people with over 70 young people already being welcomed through our doors.

The full podcast featuring our Community and Youth Events Centre Coordinator Solomon, alongside our wonderful Housing Manager Rachel, will be released by Plains Media shortly.

We are working hard to secure funding for 10 new 1.5 bedroom townhouses to support young families, or young people that aren’t suited to shared housing.

This week we presented our petition calling for targeted investment into affordable housing for older people to Minister for Seniors Casey Costello at Parliament.

The petition was launched through our Doors to Dignity campaign on older persons housing. We’d like to express our gratitude to everyone who signed and shared the petition, helping us reach 3,000 signatures.

“The housing crisis continues to deepen for older people,” says CMM Executive Director Jill Hawkey. “In 25 years, we’re going to have 400,000 older people who are going to need affordable rentals, and that's a real concern.”

The Child Poverty Action Group NZ - CPAG has released a manifesto that calls for cross-party support to reduce child poverty in New Zealand.

StatsNZ figures show that between 2022 and 2025, the number of children in material hardship rose to 47,500 despite most political parties agreeing in 2018 to halve the number of children in poverty by 2028.

CPAG says: "For too long, too many children have been asked to make do without the things they need. And while child poverty is getting worse, our politicians continue to make excuses for why more can't be done."

Our CMM Blenheim team hosted the Big Sleepout at Seymour Square last Thursday night, with 68 participants sleeping out to raise money for CMM as well as Manu Ora and Crossroads Marlborough who do amazing mahi supporting people experiencing homelessness in Blenheim.

We have to give a huge shout out to the many local businesses in Blenheim that supported this event – we have been amazed by the generosity of the Blenheim community getting behind the Big Sleepout and helping us raise over $41,000 for homelessness services in Blenheim.

Thank you to all the businesses and community groups that took part, donated items for our silent auction, and provided support on the night – we couldn’t have done this without you!

A Night Out for a Good Cause ❤️

Last night, Seymour Square became a place to pause, reflect and raise awareness for those experiencing homelessness in Blenheim and across NZ.

Hosted by Christchurch Methodist Mission around 80 people - lawyers, doctors, council members, and business owners slept out for the night to raise funds and support the local Blenheim homeless community. It was a wonderful show of community spirit, with plenty of support and people coming together for an important cause.

Annies was proud to sponsor product for the event, and it was fantastic to see it so well supported. 💚

And as for the sleep… let's just say Graeme probably got about an hour! 😂 But it was absolutely worth it for such a meaningful cause.

I wasn't successful getting any sleep at the Big Sleepout but do believe there was success nonetheless.

Thanks to everyone who sponsored me I raised $2600 for the Christchurch Methodist Mission and $123,000 has been raised so far from the event.

Overall we were really quite fortunate as it didn't go below 8 degrees which is fairly balmy for August and there wasn't any wind chill flowing through the gates. Would have been quite a different story if this took place this time last week. I also need to thank whoever made the soup that was available all night. They are clearly a culinary genius it was absolutely delicious.

We were also very fortunate to have the stadium concourse offered up for the evening and it was particularly interesting to see how the facility captures sound and atmosphere. One loud snore can easily be heard from the other end of the stadium. Big respect also to the stadium & Venues Otautahi CEO Caroline Harvie-Teare who offered up the venue for a worthy cause and also spent the night here sleeping on the firm foundation of cardboard & concrete.

I really appreciated meeting so many incredible people who are voluntering and/or working really tough jobs doing everything they can to support our homeless community in Christchurch.
Also really good to meet 2 Selwyn Councillors (Cr Wilshire & Cr Barnsley) who made the journey here to support the cause.

Hearing the success stories of people being supported into permanent housing was both confronting and inspiring and I'm grateful for the learnings and connections I made from attending.

Well done to all involved in putting this event together. We're blessed to have a flash new facility in our city and this was a good reminder that we can put it to good use for good causes.
