❗PĀNUI – RŪNAKA HUI POSTPONED ❗

Tēnā koutou katoa,

This pānui is to advise that the rūnaka hui scheduled for Sunday 24th May has been postponed due to kaimahi capacity and illness. The new date for the next Rūnaka hui is Sunday 31st May 2026. Kaumātua Hui will be rescheduled to Saturday 30th May.

Tari Update

We also wish to acknowledge Holly Cunningham as she concludes her role as Interim Manager. During a period of transition, Holly has provided steady leadership, deep care, and unwavering tautoko to our kaimahi and whānau. Her commitment to ensuring our people were supported has been deeply valued, and we extend our sincere appreciation for the contribution she has made to the Rūnaka.

We are also pleased to advise that Dardanelle McLean-Smith will be stepping in to provide temporary operational support for the next six months. Dardanelle brings over 10 years of experience working alongside papatipu rūnaka, with a strong background in governance, operations, and kaupapa Māori programme delivery. Her approach is grounded in whanaukataka and a commitment to supporting sustainable, whānau-centred outcomes.

We look forward to the upcoming Rūnaka hui and continuing our collective work together towards Te Mahi Tamariki.

Ngā mihi nui,

Te Komiti Whakahaere

Check out this beautiful taoka carved by Rūnaka Chair Aporini Deer and Keelan Walker for the Marlborough Boys’ First XV. It was created as a pou to represent the player’s story and to travel with them to their rugby games.

The head of the tewhatewha is carved from whale bone, and the tinana is made from kānuka.

Aporini commented: “It was a massive privilege to be asked to be part of creating this taoka. The boys acknowledged this by presenting their haka to us as a koha in return, which was incredibly special”.

Koukourarata were also in attendance at In Tuahiwi Pā, North Canterbury an Anzac Service was held to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the return home of the Ngāi Tahu members of D Company of 28 Māori Battalion.

A special focus of the service was the role played by Te Roopu Tamariki ō Tuahiwi, a party of 25 School children from Tuahiwi School who travelled to Wellington to perform as part of the official welcoming delegation on Pipitea Wharf when the Māori Battalion disembarked off the Ship Dominion Monarch on January 23, 1946.

Te Rā o Ngā Hōia

Pictured here are the whānau who woke up early and attended the ANZAC day dawn parade on Saturday 25th April at Rāpaki.

This year’s ANZAC day held particular significance recognising all of those who have served Aotearoa New Zealand in times of war, conflict and peace support operations.

Ko te manu e kai ana i te miro, nōnā te ngahere; ko te manu e kai ana i te mātauranga, nōnā te ao.

The forest belongs to the bird who feasts on the miro berry, the world belongs to the bird that feasts on knowledge.

Massive congratulations to our whanauka Dan Buchanan who was celebrated for receiving the tohu Master of Māori and Indigenous Leadership with Distinction at the Eke Tangaroa Māori Graduation Ceremony for The University of Canterbury last Friday.

Also to Tamati Cunningham for Bachelor of Arts majoring in Te Reo Māori and Māori and Indigenous studies. He is pictured with partner Lucy Jessep, Kai Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, Waitaha who received her Master of Science in Psychology with Merit.

We also celebrate Billie Burger, pictured here with her pāpā Peter Burger. Billie graduated from Massey University with a Bachelor of Screen Arts and was also the Massey Scholar meaning she was top of her class, tau kē Billie.

We know there would have been other whānau at these ceremonies, or who have recently graduated. Do send us a pic and details so we can acknowledge them too. Or, perhaps there is a new pēpi in the whānau, another award received. Email us at [email protected] to add to our pānui and submit it into the Te Pānui Rūnaka.
