Christchurch China Sister Cities Committee

Christchurch China Sister Cities Committee The Christchurch- Gansu province relationship was founded in 1984 as a result of an agreement between Rewi Alley and the Christchurch City Council.

The Christchurch China Sister Cities Committee (CCSCC) is a not-for-profit network of Christchurch community members who work towards building and strengthening our city's relationships with our sister cities in Gansu province and Wuhan, China. Rewi Alley was born in Canterbury and devoted sixty years of his life working in China for the betterment of the people. By the time of his death in 1987,

he was one of the five most revered westerners in China. CCSCC works to honour his memory. Our sister city relationship with Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, began in 2006 when a friendship agreement between the Mayors of Christchurch and Wuhan was signed. The objectives and activities of the committee include the following:

- To develop educational opportunities between the two nations which benefit both students and teachers. Christchurch regularly sends a teacher to Gansu to teach English. Students from Wuhan have started attending the University of Canterbury.

- To develop arts and cultural exchanges. We occasionally host Chinese artists or cultural groups that visit our city.

- To support and assist where necessary opportunities for Christchurch commercial interests to develop trade with China.

- To foster tourism opportunities to and from China. CCSCC regularly hosts Chinese visitors and a number of the committee have travelled to China to strengthen ongoing relationships.

-To foster activities which acknowledge the legacy of Rewi Alley's work.

Feeling a little heavier with all the feasting?

Then why not visit Halswell Quarry Park and the Chinese Garden.

As a family activity walk to the top of the hill, and once at the top enjoy the view of the Canterbury Plains.

Coming down from the hill is easier than going up the hill; trust us, we have completed a lot of planting days on the hill.

Share with us your photos from the top of the hill.

It was our pleasure to attend the First “China Through My Eyes” Short Video Competition! 🎬✨ Hosted by Madam He Ying Consul General of the Chinese Consulate General based in Christchurch.

What an unforgettable afternoon! From the mesmerising lion dances and face-changing performances to inspiring speeches, creative videos, and massive smiles — our young Kiwi creators truly stole the show with their talent, curiosity, and endless imagination. 🌟

A huge thank you to all the students, whānau, guests, and partners who made this event so special and full of life. Your creativity has built a beautiful cultural bridge between China and Aotearoa, one story at a time.

Take the time to swipe through to relive the magic—the performances, the awards, the laughter, and those heartfelt moments that left us all buzzing. ❤️📸

Also, Madam, He announced this short firm event would be organised for next year.

A great opportunity for all people to showcase their talents 😉

The Rewi Alley Treasure Hunt is very different from the Rewi Alley Trail

The Rewi Alley Treasure Hunt is designed for school learners between 7 and 14 years of age and is a fun and interactive way to learn about Rewi Alley and his connection to Christchurch and Canterbury.

It is under the umbrella of the Children's University and can be accessed via that portal.

Collaborative partners will be adding additional educational activities to keep the Rewi Alley Foundation of New Zealand Children's University portal active and engaging.

In time it is hoped that this will become a great resource for learners of all ages.

At the launch of the Rewi Alley Trail and Treasure Hunt, we were honoured to have our friends from the Hubei Associations based in Christchurch join us.

One of the many positive outcomes for the day was how we can develop more fun, education-based learning initiatives that engage with children and their families.

Also ways to engage with fun learning activities where we include learning about China and Canterbury.

The treasure hunt initiative is part of the foundation's collaboration with the Children's University.

Yesterday the Christchurch China Sister Cities was pleased to support the Rewi Alley Foundation of New Zealand, which held the Inaugural Rewi Alley Treasure Hunt at Turanga Library in the Christchurch Central City.

The treasure hunt is both an educational and fun interactive experience for children and their parents to explore the Christchurch CBD whilst learning about Rewi Alley.

The Rewi Alley Foundation also had activities for the more mature attendees.

Their success register and ours is the smiles on people's faces. After completing the tasks!!

It was a great day had by all.

A special thank you to two incredible leaders whose vision and dedication were instrumental in creating the new Rewi Alley Memorial Museum.

The Christchurch China Sister Cities Committee wants to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Sir David Carter, Patron of the New Zealand China Friendship Society, and Madam He Ying, Consul General at the Chinese Consulate in Christchurch.

Their tireless work and collaborative spirit were the driving forces behind bringing the museum to life. Their commitment ensures that Rewi Alley's legacy of international friendship and humanitarianism will continue to inspire our community and future generations.

This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without their leadership. Thank you, Sir David and Madam He, for your invaluable contributions.

A huge shout-out to the incredible team behind the scenes!

The Christchurch-China Sister Cities Committee wants to give special recognition to the Christchurch City Council's International Relationship Team, led by the amazing Duncan Sandeman.

Coordinating the recent 24-hour visit of Mr. Zhao Leji, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, was a massive undertaking. The team worked tirelessly with multiple agencies to ensure two major events, including the grand opening of the Rewi Alley Memorial Museum, flowed seamlessly.

Their exceptional coordination on behalf of the museum's key stakeholders—the New Zealand China Friendship Society and the Chinese Consulate in Christchurch—was instrumental.

It’s this kind of hard work and dedication that makes our city shine on the world stage. Thank you for all that you do!
