SQUISH SQUASH 📣

These are the sounds you heard at the planting day with CarbonInvoice at Mangaroa Farm in Wellington.

Thank you Carbon Invoice for bringing out such a hardy crew. The boggy sections didn't slow them down one bit. A whopping 2213 plants in the ground to close of this season in Te Whanganui a Tara. Ka pai!

A big shout out to Mangaroa Farms for supplying the site. Mangaroa Farms are located in Upper Hutt and are definitely worth a visit. When you do go... check out our plantings and let us know how they are doing.

🪤💪 Meet the WOPPers!

Quentin is one of our most dedicated volunteers for the Whaka Ora Pest Project (WOPP) in Christchurch and a true trap maintenance legend!
Quentin has been a WOPPer for just over a year and is one of our all-stars, helping keep traps across the Diamond Harbour area in top condition. His regular maintenance rounds have helped deliver great results, and his willingness to take on extra trap lines is hugely appreciated.
A retired chemist, Quentin clearly isn’t one for sitting still. In his spare time, he runs his own seismograph, is building a device to monitor the Earth’s magnetic field, repairs a 1970s-style synthesizer and follows sumo wrestling. Safe to say, he’s never short of a project!
His favourite native species is the Alexander beetle, a great reminder that predator control isn’t just about protecting birds. Our incredible native invertebrates benefit too.
And the fun facts don’t stop there. “Quentin” is actually his middle name, while his real first name remains a closely guarded family secret. His grossest trapping moment involved a pair of giant cellar slugs that somehow managed to trigger a trap, slime all over it, and escape completely unharmed. We’re still not sure who came out on top in that battle!
Ngā mihi nui, Quentin, for all the mahi you put into CVNZ and WOPP. Your dedication, knowledge and countless maintenance rounds make a huge difference for wildlife in Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour.

Can someone say MODEL?

I know you're thinking it, but the fabulous volunteers who headed to Belmont Regional park are giving super model. Everyone was striking that pose and HITTING.

Their planting was also model material, the standard was totally top notch and we cant wait to see the ngahere continue to thrive upwards at Belmont.

Thank you QBE for sponsoring the day, we wouldn't have discovered all these camera kings, queens and thems without your support.

🌿 Meet the team behind CVNZ’s projects and events in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland!

From restoring local waterways to connecting people with te taiao, our Auckland team brings plenty of passion, knowledge and energy to the mahi.

Rosa loves seeing people from all walks of life come together to care for the environment. She’s inspired by the connections people build with each other and with nature, and the collective impact they can create. Her favourite native species? The cheeky kākā, which she grew up surrounded by on Aotea Great Barrier Island.

Dillon loves seeing people grow their knowledge, discover new ways to make a positive impact and leave a volunteer day with practical things they can do for conservation. His favourite is pūriri, a hardworking forest tree that provides food and habitat for native fauna, as well as welcome shade and shelter for people.

Drew loves seeing people connect with nature through their work. His favourite native species is the Mercury Island tusked wētā, whose incredible conservation story saw the species saved from extinction through a captive breeding programme descended from just three individuals.

We’re lucky to have such a passionate team working alongside volunteers to protect nature and connect communities across Tāmaki Makaurau!

A change of scenery, and 618 new native plants! 🌱

A huge thank you to the Apex Group Ltd team, who recently swapped the office for a day out in nature at the Papakura Stream Restoration Project, Auckland.

Although it was a small group, they made every plant count — together, they planted an impressive 618 native trees and plants. It was great to hear how much the team enjoyed getting outside, trying something different, and contributing to hands-on conservation mahi.

These plants will help create future habitat for wildlife, improve water quality, and support the long-term restoration of the Papakura Stream catchment.

💚 Thanks, Apex, for getting stuck in and making such a positive impact!

🌿 Nurture the whenua and your reo at Waikākāriki!

Join us at Horseshoe Lake in Chriscthurch for a special day of wetland restoration, te reo Māori and connection to te taiao.

We’ll be working around restoration plantings, clearing back long grasses and giving native plants the space they need to grow strong. Think of it as a conservation treasure hunt as we search through the grasses for native plants ready to be set free! 🌱

This event is a collaboration between Christchurch City Council, Conservation Volunteers New Zealand and Kōrero ki Ōtautahi, celebrating the connection between te reo and te taiao.

📅 Saturday 26 September
⏰ 10am–2pm
📍 Waikākāriki, Horseshoe Lake, Christchurch

All levels and abilities are welcome. We’ll have bilingual planting guides and resources available to help you practise your reo while you’re out in the whenua.

And when the mahi is done, join us for a BBQ! 🌭

🌱 20 volunteers. 1,857 native plants. One seriously muddy mission.

A huge thank you to the team, who recently joined us for a planting day at the Papakura Stream Restoration Project, Auckland.

The site was incredibly boggy, but that didn’t stop this team from getting stuck in. They absolutely smashed through the original 1,500 plants we had laid out and managed to plant an extra few hundred further up the hill as infill.

Together, just 20 people planted an incredible 1,857 native trees and plants — helping restore habitat, improve water quality, and create a healthier future for the Papakura Stream catchment.

Thank you, Carbon Invoice, for bringing such great energy, getting stuck in despite the conditions, and leaving the site looking even better than you found it! 💚

What do CVNZ staff do when they’re not out in the field?

The answer? Many things!

While our field sessions are where much of the action happens, there’s plenty of mahi going on behind the scenes to make each volunteer day possible.

Here's a little peek behind the scenes of what the CVNZ team gets up to when we’re not out muddy in the field with you all:

📸 Spreading the word – recruiting volunteer at expos
📸 Making things safe for volunteers – waterblasting the nursery
📸 Building skills and confidence – training our awesome volunteers

There's also plenty of admin that goes into meetings, writing funding applications, planning projects and preparing equipment - all part of the mahi!
