Horizons Oscar

Horizons Oscar Providing fun and engaging OSCAR childcare programmes in Greater Hornby for more than 20 years In July 2015 we decided to open a before school programme.

Horizons Oscar is based in Hornby, Christchurch under the Hornby Presbyterian Community Trust banner and, up until September 2012, we were known as Hornby Presbyterian Community Oscar. We have been running our OSCAR childcare programmes in Christchurch since 2002 when the City Council approached us to manage one of their childcare programmes at Gilberthorpe School. This led to them asking us to ta

ke on two other local after school care and holiday programme locations. In 2010 we decided to open an Intermediate programme, giving us four Oscar programmes. In 2015 we decided that, due to financial restrictions, we would temporarily close the Intermediate after school care programme, but would continue running the Intermediate school Holiday programme. We currently have programmes running from Hornby Primary School, South Hornby School, Gilberthorpes School and Wigram School. Hornby Primary and South Hornby offer Before School, After School and Holiday programmes. Wigram and Gilberthorpe provide After School programmes. We are committed to providing quality, affordable childcare programmes for the community. At Horizons Oscar we endeavour to create an atmosphere where your children feel safe and secure. We offer a well supervised, fun, safe, learning environment for your child. We aim to help the children learn good values, experience new challenges and develop new skills. Children are provided with afternoon tea, help with homework, structured activities and time for free play. We are able to provide transport at a small cost, from some of the surrounding schools. Check out the enrolment page or contact the office for more information. All our OSCAR Staff are police checked and well trained. We work on an on-site staff ratio of 1:10 and 1:8 ratio when on outings.

13 years ago, we met Ethan.

He was a very sweet, non-verbal five year old with special needs - so his mum was very nervous to leave him at the Horizons Oscar holiday programme.

But he thrived.

Last month he turned 18, and to celebrate the end of his Oscar journey, his birthday wish was to go out for a beer with the Oscar staff who have spent so many years with him.

Oscar Coordinator, Marie, was there for his first days at Oscar, and said supporting Ethan as he grew had been a huge and very rewarding journey.

“We’ve seen him grow from someone who couldn’t talk to us, to someone who communicated well with us and would joke a lot with staff.”

Usually our holiday programmes are limited to those under 14 years old, but an exception was made for Ethan. That was special not only for Ethan but for our staff, who were able to build a deeper relationship with him through the teenage years.

“We’ve gone from being leaders to being friends. From the person who tells him what to do, to the person he can talk to,” Marie said.
Ethan’s mum said the programme meant a lot to Ethan.

“As parents of an Intellectually Disabled and Non-verbal boy, we had to be mindful of his surroundings. After talking to Marie we discovered that nothing was an issue. He did some firsts with Marie and the team, like going to the movies and going on public buses and boat rides. He enjoyed going so much that he would ask all the time to go.

“All the Team Leaders and staff that had interaction with Ethan exceeded our expectations. He learnt a lot of social skills, independence and as he got older leadership skills. We would like to thank Marie and her team for the opportunities they gave Ethan.”

Thank you to Ethan’s family for trusting us to care for and support him.

Thank you to all our 500@5 supporters and Hornby/Hope Champions, who help to keep these programmes affordable and accessible for local families.

And thank you, most of all, to Ethan. We’ll miss your cheeky jokes, and we’re so proud of how far we’ve seen you come. All the best for your journey ahead - and please feel free to stop back in anytime!

If your children attend Wigram Primary School, and you're currently finding it tough to juggle work, family time and everything else life throws at you - we may be able to help.

Spaces are currently available at our Wigram after school care programme - a supportive space for children to unwind after school.

Our programme includes time for free play, for homework, for rest and quiet time, for games and activities, and an afternoon tea provided by us.

As a local charity, we know how big a challenge it can be to juggle work or study while managing family life - so we aim to support you with quality, affordable out of school care, which supports the needs of your children and gives you peace of mind.

We work to create an atmosphere where your child feels safe and secure, helping them practice good values, experience new challenges and make new friends.

The Gilberthorpe after-school programme is also open to children at Yaldhurst School Tōtara Tūkaha, who can use our van shuttle service.

Contact us anytime to discuss, or visit our website https://www.horizonsoscar.net.nz/ to learn more, or https://horizons.aimyplus.com/Account/Login to enrol your child
