NEW BRIGHTON… A CLOTHING HUB FOR YOUNG & OLD

The pre-loved clothing market in Christchurch is thriving, reflecting a nationwide boom driven by affordability, sustainability, and digital convenience following a multi-billion-dollar worldwide trend.

Affordability is the top driver, followed by environmental concerns and the unique style preferences.

Gen Z leads the charge, with over 90% buying second-hand, often motivated by sustainability and individuality.

As for New Brighton…

‘Lola’s Store’ has just relocated into a bigger premises on the corner of Oram and Seaview Road and first day of trading was a humdinger with one customer alone spending $100.

New Brighton is becoming a bit of a hub for this market and for those in the know, these shops are not all the same, for instance some offer more bohemian styles, whilst there are also shabby chic or vintage inspired and others presenting a range of what comes in goes out.

Some retailers also have on-line websites.

Mike from ‘Tide &Timber’ bucks the second-hand trend with all new skate wear, work wear, printed tees and good branded clothing, but there are some pretty good options out there if you know where to look.

At the other end is the charity ‘It Takes a Village Hub’ down in the mall giving away free baby clothing bundles for those who need them.

Here is an overview of what you can find in our local area in no particular order, you might be surprised…

WHY WE LIVE IN COASTAL NEW BRIGHTON

A sunny day, a happy crowd, the chirrup sound of many birds, occasional shout of HOWZAT from the local cricket pitch and of course the big event of the year, the 20th New Brighton Gardens open day.

And a car boot sale at Shirley Boys/Avonside Girls, the Saturday Market and the St Faiths Church fair.
Meanwhile back at the New Brighton Community Gardens…

NEW CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL SWORN IN

Amongst the 16 wards represented was Councillor Celeste Donovan from Coastal.

In her speech, Donovan stated there are always challenges and for the city some of the more important are climate, housing and transport related.

Later she talked about the city needing to prioritize new transport initiatives before it became road gridlocked: “There are good ideas being floated and now is the time to get serious about airing these to the public and getting buy in.”

Donovan says the east still needs overdue investment and renewing infrastructure remains a key component.

She said on the other side of the coin, representing the Coastal is an honour and it is on the pathway of unlimited potential, already on the radar of increasing numbers of people wanting to either buy a house here or open a business:

“The next two years will see growth and development on an unprecedented level.”
