On Monday, Grant Miller, Chair of Central Plains Water (CPW), discussed the largest irrigation scheme in New Zealand, covering 71,000 hectares. CPW has reduced nitrate levels by 29% since inception (depending on how and when this was measured), contributing $400 million to GDP last year. The scheme uses 100 million cubic meters of water annually, with a 98% compliance rate for farm environment plans. Despite initial challenges, CPW has achieved significant economic and environmental benefits, including a 40-50% reduction in groundwater abstraction. The scheme also includes innovative features like a large-scale recharge system for the Selwyn River.
