Our mission is to bridge the gap between hunger and holistic well-being by providing a weekly community meal that serves as a pathway to accessing essential social services. At Kai for the Community, our mission is to bridge the gap between hunger and holistic well-being by providing a weekly community two-course meal that serves as a pathway to accessing essential social services. We are dedicated to addressing immediate food insecurity and fostering a supportive environment where people can connect with the resources they need to thrive. Guided by the principles of Manaakitanga and Whanaungatanga, we strive to cultivate a sense of belonging and reciprocal support within our communities. We aim to create a platform for empowerment, collaboration and community-driven solutions. Our goal is to ensure every individual feels valued, connected, and equipped to overcome challenges. We'd love to have you on board as a volunteer! Whether you can assist with our Sunday service, help with fundraising, support administrative tasks, or contribute to networking efforts, your involvement is valued. If your organisation, school, or community group would like to cater for a Kai night and be part of the experience we offer every Sunday, please email us at [email protected]. Together, we can make a real impact, one meal at a time.

In May, we were served by Catholic Cathedral Parish and Cashmere High School. It was Cashmeres first time in our new kitchen. We also welcomed a new group - The Sri Sathya Sai Global Council of NZ Christchurch branch.

Well team, it’s been a very busy year so far, with plenty of new and old faces at our new venue.

In April, we had Soroptomist Group & St Vincent de Paul Selwyn Conference prepare and serve some delicious meals. It was both groups first time in our new kitchen! Thank you!

🤝 Partnerships make a difference.

Collaborating with community partners helps us extend our reach and provide practical support to those who need it most. Partnering with St Vincent de Paul Manchester Street has been an absolute blessing. Just two weeks ago, we opened our community kitchen with two bundles of good quality jackets, which were snapped up in a heartbeat by people needing warmth this winter. This week, with thanks to Vinnies we were also able to provide sleeping bags to individuals experiencing hardship and sleeping rough.

We also want to extend a huge thank you to St Bede's College for their recent toiletries drive. Your generosity has helped us stock essential hygiene items that are so often needed but can be difficult for many whānau to access.

These acts of kindness may seem small, but to someone facing hardship, a warm jacket, a sleeping bag, or basic toiletries can make all the difference.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Kai for the Community. Together, we are building a community where people are seen, valued, and cared for. 💛🖤

✨ 8 weeks in our new home ✨

It’s hard to believe we’ve already been in our new premises for 8 weeks — what a whirlwind it has been!

The feedback from our community has been amazing especially the love for the outdoor area, which has quickly become a place for connection, laughter, and shared kai. Our volunteers have settled straight into the new kitchen with the welcome addition of a few new faces to the team! It already feels like home behind the scenes, with everyone working together to keep things flowing each week. We continue learning, adjusting, and finding our rhythm. Every week we’re adapting, improving, and growing into the space.

✨ We’re delighted to finally announce our partnership with St Vincent de Paul ✨

Following their announcement of a new concept store, we can now formally share our partnership with St Vincent de Paul.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to collaboration and community, with each organisation bringing its own strengths into a space centred on dignity, care, and connection.

Through St Vincent de Paul’s new concept store at 35 Manchester Street, Kai for the Community now has purpose built home. For us, this provides the stability and space needed to continue our current community initiatives, while developing further wrap-around support over time.

Being based alongside St Vincent de Paul creates opportunities for connection and collaboration, allowing Kai to contribute what we do best within a wider ecosystem of community care.

We are deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Vinnies and look forward to what this partnership enables for our community 💛

It has been a very busy 4 weeks for our crew! We have been cleaning, painting, sanding, sealing, unpacking, working to some pretty epic 80s tracks and more painting! We are so close to finalising our new ware! We can’t wait to welcome you into our space. Doors open 5pm - 25th January! Entrance off Atlas Way, Christchurch City Centre.
