A special fa'afetai to our MCs Ja*on and Alice who held the room with warmth and humour throughout the day.

The theme for this years Samoan Language week is E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu'u. From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

We asked our au faigaluega to reflect on the mountains in their own lives. For Matile, the answer was simple. It was her mum.

Ua e 'ai? Have you eaten?

In Samoan culture, that question carries a lot of weight. It is not just about food. It is about care, connection, and making sure the people around you are looked after.

This Samoan Language Week, take a friend to lunch and try a few of these phrases along the way. You might be surprised how far a little gagana Samoa goes.

And speaking of kai, we would love to share a meal with you this Friday 5 June, 10am to 2pm at 161 Pages Road, Wainoni.

Sāmoan Made Simple: A New Resource for a Language Worth Protecting.

E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu'u. From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

This year's theme asks something of us. It asks us to look to where we come from, to the people, the knowledge, and the language that sustains us, and to consider what we are doing to carry those things forward.

One of those people is Ja*on Tiatia.

A former NZ Rugby Sevens player, Ministry of Education staff member, and father of three, Ja*on has spent years working to make gagana Samoa accessible to everyone. He understands something that the data increasingly confirms: language is not just communication. It is wellbeing. It is identity. It is belonging.

For Ja*on, the link between language, community and wellbeing has always been personal. His work in mental health sits alongside his language revitalisation efforts because, in his view, the two are inseparable. When people lose connection to their language, they can lose connection to themselves. And when they find their way back to it, even through small everyday phrases, something shifts.

That spirit sits at the heart of what Samoan Language Week is about, and it is the spirit He Waka Tapu is celebrating this week alongside our Pasifika whānau, our au faigaluega, and our wider community here in Otautahi.

And if you want to hear from Ja*on in person, he will be joining us this Friday 5 June at our Samoan Language Week celebration at 161 Pages Road, Wainoni. Scorpio Books will have a stall on site where you can grab your own copy of Sāmoan Made Simple on the day. Free entry, open to all.

Samoan Language Week is not just about formal language, it is about weaving gagana Samoa into the everyday.

We are pretty confident "I la'u imeli talu ai" is going to be getting a workout in a few inboxes this week.

Try dropping one of these into your next meeting or email and see how it lands. Your hoamahi might just be impressed.

And if you want to celebrate in person, join us this Friday 5 June, 10am to 2pm at 161 Pages Road, Wainoni. Free entry, open to all.

He Kaimahi Tēnei - Toma Petelo.

"E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le nu'u. From the high mountains are the blessings of the village"

There is a Samoan proverb that says the blessings of a village flow down from the mountains. It speaks of the land, the forest, the ocean, the natural resources that sustained generations long before machinery or manufactured food. But it also speaks of something deeper. Of God. Of ancestors. Of the elders and leaders whose wisdom and service make a community whole. For Toma Petelo, this proverb is more than just the theme for Samoan Language Week. It's the story of his life.

Toma is the Team Lead of Manawa Mai at He Waka Tapu, a role he carries with the same quiet authority and servant leadership that has defined him long before he ever held a job title. He is 57 years old, the seventh of ten siblings, raised in the villages of Tauese and Salelologa in Sāmoa. He is a father of eight and a grandfather of nineteen. He holds the Matai title of Luamanuvae, bestowed on him by his siblings, a title that in Samoan culture upholds responsibility over status.

Growing up in a large family taught Toma early what it meant to put others first. His father, a Catechist in the Catholic Church, was known in their community as a hardworking and humble man who led by example. It was from him that Toma absorbed the values that still guide him today. The understanding that a person's character is not measured by wealth or social standing, but by how they treat people and how willing they are to serve.

"He taught me the value of hard work, the importance of integrity, and the need to remain humble regardless of achievements or position in life."

He Waka Tapu acknowledges and celebrates Samoan Language Week and the incredible Pasifika kaimahi who bring their culture, values and identity into their mahi every single day.
