Kia ora e te whānau,

We’re excited to announce our very first 3x3 Rangatahi Māori Basketball Tournament, taking place on Friday 26 June from 4:30pm - 9:30pm at Selwyn Sports Centre.

This kaupapa has grown out of conversations between Taumutu and Hurahia Limited around creating more opportunities for our rangatahi to connect, be active, and engage in positive spaces together. Through support received via Sport NZ health promotion funding, we’ve been able to bring this event to life as a way of celebrating sport, hauora, whanaungatanga and community.

The tournament will bring together rangatahi from across our hāpori and wider Māori networks for an evening of fast-paced 3x3 basketball, music, kai and community atmosphere. Alongside the competition, there will also be spot prizes, activations, and opportunities for whānau to come together and support our young people.

Divisions will include:
• U16 Tāne
• U18 Tāne
• U18 Wāhine

Whether you’re playing, supporting from the sidelines, or just coming along to enjoy the atmosphere, we’d love to see you there.

🌱 As the Whakaora Te Waikēkēwai project comes to a close this month, Te Taumutu Rūnanga is reflecting on five years of restoration along this important waterway.

This week, another 1,750 eco-sourced native plants were planted, with a further 1,700 scheduled to go into the ground before the end of June.

Led by Te Taumutu Rūnanga, with support from Environment Canterbury through the Te Waihora Co-Governance Group and funding from the Ministry for the Environment's Freshwater Improvement Fund, the project has worked to restore 8km of Te Waikēkēwai Stream, helping improve water quality, stabilise stream banks, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen the health of Te Waihora.

A huge mihi to our Wai-Ora Ecological Contracting team, Citycare Property team and everyone who has contributed to this kaupapa over the past five years. Earlier this year, the project was recognised with the Te Waka o Aoraki trophy for conservation excellence.

Rare species including kōtuku and matuku-hūrepo have been sighted within restored areas, providing an encouraging sign of the positive impact this mahi is having.

Ngā mihi to Environment Canterbury the Ministry for the Environment our project partners, whānau, contractors, and supporters who have helped make this kaupapa possible.

This project demonstrates what can be achieved through mana whenua leadership, strong partnerships, and a long-term commitment to restoring the health of our waterways and taiao.

Te Ahikaaroa prevail.
Congratulations to all who participated in the Waitaha Regional Kapa Haka Championships over the weekend. We acknowledge the selection of Te Ahikaaroa, Kōkō Tangiwai, Ngā Manu ā Tāne, Rukutia, Te Pao a Tahu as Waitaha representatives who will travel to Kirikiriroa for Te Matatini in February. But also all others who committed to the training, emotion and dedication required to make it on stage.
In particular we acknowledge the whānau of Te Taumutu within all teams, especially Te Ahikaaroa, the 2026 Waitaha champions.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.

13/05/2026

Nui te mihi ki Te Ara Kākāriki - Greenway Canterbury for all your support and mahi with the Whakaora te Waikēkēwai team over the last few years.

Check out a glimpse into a kaupapa shared with Waitaha Kura who visited on Monday this week to get their 'plant on'! Tau kē! 🙌🏽🌱

He mana, he tapu, he whakamataku!
Koia ko Moki e maiangi ana ki te rangi, he ātea ki te whenua,
He tipua, he taniwha, he tangata!
Ngāti Moki e ara! E ara e!

Please join us in welcoming Rulon Nutira as our newly appointed Pou Arataki / Director for Te Hā o Te Ruahikihiki. Rulon officially commenced in this role on April 1st, completing the final appointment to the Board of Directors for Te Taumutu Rūnanga Ltd.

Rulon brings extensive experience in cultural leadership, alongside a deep and rich puna of mātauranga that he carries into his current role at Tāwhaki. Raised on the pā at the heels of his elders, Rulon has gained a strong grounding in his Ruahikihikitanga from those who came before him.

He also brings significant governance experience, currently serving as a board member of Te Pā o Rākaihautū, and has previously served our hapū under the former executive structure. We look forward to the leadership and insight he will bring to this role.

Another wonderful Taumutu Cooks event at Te Pā o Moki on Sunday, with the pantry improv challenge tantalising our taste buds. Our Cooks were let loose in the pantry and fridges to conjure savouries and sweets from items on hand and their talents shone through. Thank you to everyone involved for their enthusiasm and banter, the final event in this series is 19 April.
