Big Brothers Big Sisters were proud to take part in this awesome piece of work, reviewing the impact of youth work across Aotearoa.

It found equivocally YOUTH WORK CHANGES LIVES.

When we invest in young people, we are investing in stronger families, communities, and futures.

The Social Return on Investment (SROI) report by Hands for Impact found that for every $1 invested in youth work generates $12.69 of social value for taiohi. Empowering them to improve relationships, forge belonging, identity, wellbeing, safety,
agency, participation, and future opportunities.

THE LONG-TERM IMPACT
Taiohi are better positioned to thrive, shape their own lives,
pursue futures that matter to them, support others and contribute meaningfully to their
communities.

Whānau, we’re excited to be sharing something we, Hands for Impact, and many others have been working towards for a long time.

The Youth Work Impact Report brings together new evidence to show the difference youth work makes for young people, whānau and communities in Aotearoa.

Our sector have long known the difference youth work makes. Now we have another way to show it.

Dive into the research to discover what actually changes for young people as a result of youth work, how the researchers arrived at this value figure, and what the findings mean for the future of youth work in Aotearoa.

We spent an awesome and important few days recently with our beautiful National team at Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Zealand and BBBS teams from branches across the moto at our annual Hui. 👫👭

Hui is a valuable place for BBBS staff to share, learn, support and connect with each other, and come away with learnings and new ideas to implement for the year ahead. 💭🗣️

A BIG thank you to our amazing National team who organised everything! Congratulations to this years award winners! and also our incredible Mentoring Coordinators Eleanor and Amy who received a special acknowledgment for all the care and dedication they both give to their roles. 🏆🤩

Hui for us would not possible without the generous support of Pub Charity Limited. We are so grateful for their ongoing support of our mahi and backing the potential of local youth! 🙏💪🏽

We’re grateful to Christchurch City Council and their Strengthening Communities Fund for providing funding towards our operating costs. 💜

Our connection with the Council goes right back to the beginning. In 2004, BBBS Christchurch was established in response to an identified need by CCC for more positive adult role models in the lives of local young people.

More than 20 years later, that need for strong, trusted relationships remains just as important.

Since the beginning, we’ve worked hard to grow and adapt our programme alongside our community, supporting long-term one-to-one mentoring relationships for tamariki and rangatahi across Ōtautahi.

Funding towards our operating costs helps keep the foundations of that work in place, so our team can continue supporting safe, meaningful mentoring relationships where they’re needed most.

Thank you to Christchurch City Council for continuing to support our kaupapa and the young people of our city. 💜

What better way to spend a chilly Christchurch day than baking chocolate chip cookies together? ❄️🍪💜

While the city enjoyed its one little taste of snow this winter, Lilly and her Tuakana/Big Eliza were keeping cosy in the school kitchen during their weekly mentoring session.

A bit of measuring, mixing, baking and, of course, taste-testing made for a pretty delicious way to spend time together!

Our School-Based Mentoring matches meet for an hour each week during term time, and it’s simple moments like these, sharing an activity, chatting and having fun together, that help build a strong and trusted connection over time.

We reckon Lilly and Eliza picked a pretty perfect activity for a snow day! 💜

💜 KA MAU TE WEHI! IT’S WERO TIME!

Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori - Māori Language Week is here and we’ve set our Tuakana and Teina matches a wee wero (challenge); learn how to introduce themselves and say where they’re from in te reo Māori.

It’s something they can learn together, have a go at together, and hopefully build a little more confidence using te reo along the way.

And because we’d never give our matches a challenge we weren’t willing to try ourselves… we’re extending the wero to you too!

Our Development Coordinator, Ang, is a beginner and has bravely stepped up first to give it a go 👇

Have a watch, then see if you can introduce yourself and say where you’re from in te reo Māori too. And if you’re feeling brave, film it, post it and tag us so we can cheer you on!

You could even rope in your whānau, friends or workmates and learn together.

A huge thank you to Air Rescue Services for their generous grant covering three months of our rent, phone and internet costs. 🏢📱💻

They might not be the flashiest expenses to talk about, but they’re the everyday essentials that keep our doors open, our team connected, and our mentoring programme running smoothly.

Support like this helps make sure our staff can stay focused on what matters most: supporting our Tuakana, Teina and whānau, and creating more life-changing mentoring relationships across Ōtautahi.

We’re incredibly grateful to Air Rescue Services for backing our mahi and helping keep the wheels turning behind the scenes. 💜
