We have been thinking lately how people see us and the work we do🤷🏻♀️ most see a cool community garden and yes we grow amazing food 🥬🥕🥦🫑🧅🧄🍆🫛🥒🙌 and encourage healthy eating, understanding of the nutritional value of our food and the connection to our health and wellbeing , but did you know 🤔the Garden is in fact a tool to something much bigger.
It’s a place where youth build confidence , learn practical skills and get ready for work. Our seniors stay active and connected . First time parents meet other parents, homeschoolers learn, pupils attend workshops , students research and people from all walks of life and countries find community. But there is more …
It’s also a place where people facing though times can simply turn up and be part of something and know they are seen and not alone, they might deal with disability, isolation, family issues, homelessness while working , are caught in the justice system or facing that ongoing battle of recovery from addiction, the gardens provides a place of belonging, we see that daily.
What makes our approach different is we use the Gardens as a tool to work alongside people rather than across a desk from them. support happens while weeding, making jam and painting a fence or sharing a cuppa and simply being embedded in a community. For many this feels safer and more accessible than approaching formal services and often allows us to bridge the gap between someone struggling and the professional help they may eventually feel ok to seek. Admitting you need help is not easy.
So yes some come for the garden to create and look after the spaces, Thank you 🫶 but many come for a little hope and find connection, friendship and strength to get on with it.
So to see us, understand that we sure grow amazing produce but along side that, we are growing healthier, stronger communities and opportunities for those who need them the most 🫶 If you made it till here we appreciate your support in what ever form☺️feel free to comment with a sunflower🌻and or your thoughts❤️
