Tanning, weight loss, anti‑aging — 🧪 peptides are being promoted for a lot of things right now. But what do we actually know about them?

Many peptides are sold online without medical oversight, and the claims often go far beyond what research can support. DISC Trust’s National Harm Reduction Lead, Jason George, joined experts from SHORE & Whāriki Drug Team and the University of Auckland to unpack the risks and the hype. 💬

DISC Trust’s weekly Steroid Clinic offers confidential and non-judgmental harm reduction advice and guidance around monitoring your health. ✨ You can make an appointment here https://www.disctrust.co.nz/ipeds

🩷 Meet Margaret — our exceptional Harm Reduction Nurse supporting communities across Otago and Southland.

Margaret brings decades of specialist nursing expertise in hepatology, hepatitis care, and community health. She’s a former Clinical Nurse Specialist in Hepatology at Southern DHB and — in recognition of her outstanding contribution to hepatology in Aotearoa — she was awarded a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM). That’s one of the country’s highest honours 🎉

She also contributes to hepatitis B work across the Pacific, strengthening care and knowledge across the region.

At DISC Trust, Margaret leads hepatitis C, and blood‑borne virus screening pathways across Otago and Southland, bringing deep clinical skill, compassion, and unwavering commitment to every client she supports.

Here she is last week in Balclutha at Vaka Tautua's health event where she completed 40+ Hep C and HIV/syphilis tests and shared her expertise with the community.

Margaret — we are so lucky to have you 🩷

Ever wondered what it’s like to access a free, legal, licensed, and confidential drug checking service?

Our friends at The Level have put together a great video showing what it’s like to visit our service in Wellington at Drugs Project.

Our Wellington clinic runs Tuesday–Saturday, offering free, legal, confidential drug checking year‑round. These services help people get clearer information, reduce harm, and make safer decisions.

🎧 Watch the video and learn how the process works in a safe, supportive environment.

DISC Trust is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Rose Crossin as Chair of our Clinical Governance Committee.

Rose is a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Otago (Christchurch). Her research focuses on understanding and preventing drug harm from a public health perspective, and on how harm data can inform evidence‑based drug policy. She has worked with the NZ Ministry of Health, Te Whatu Ora, Ministry of Justice, and Police on translating research into policy and practice.

The Clinical Governance Committee provides leadership and oversight on all matters of clinical governance within the Trust. It ensures our services are safe, effective, and centered on lived experience — delivered by a supported peer and clinical workforce. Grounded in harm reduction, peer leadership, and equity, the Committee helps ensure our work upholds dignity, reduces stigma, and improves health outcomes for people who use drugs and other communities in need.

💜 Not sure what a Hep C, HIV, or syphilis test is like? It’s super quick and easy. Here’s a short video showing exactly what the process looks like.

A huge thanks to Uruuruwhenua Hauora Central for supporting our outreach in Alexandra last week and for sharing this video with the community.

Your health matters — and getting tested is simple.

🤝 For 37 years DISC Trust has stood alongside people who use drugs — and we’ve seen how fear can stop someone from calling for help when it matters most.

We’ve submitted in strong support of the Drug Overdose (Assistance Protection) Legislation Bill, which would protect anyone who seeks emergency assistance during a suspected overdose.

You can support this life‑saving change too. Submissions close 11.59pm, Tuesday 16 June 2026.

You can indicate in your submission if you would like it to remain anonymous.

We’re proud to be out in the Otago & Central community bringing free, confidential health checks. Last week kaimahi from Ōtautahi Christchurch and Ōtepoti Dunedin visited Wānaka, Ōamaru, and Alexandra 💜

Our outreach teams partner with local services to offer quick, easy finger‑prick testing for Hepatitis C, HIV, and syphilis, along with heart health checks in some locations. These clinics are all about making health care accessible, meeting people where they’re at, and helping our communities stay well.

Thanks to Oamaru Pharmacy, Uruuruwhenua Hauora Central, Heart Foundation NZ, and the Wanaka Community Hub for supporting our mahi allowing us to bring free health checks to the community.
