Last Thursday, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was beatified in St Louis, Missouri at a Mass concelebrated by 90 Bishops, over 1000 priests, and 50,000 people. Blessed Fulton Sheen was a much-loved Bishop who was known for his television and radio programmes in the United States in the 1950โ€™s and 1960โ€™s all aimed at preaching the good news of Jesus Christ to all. He was also the author of many books. Pope Leo XIV described him as โ€œa tireless preacher of the Gospel through the modern means of communication, and a diligent shepherd animated by missionary zeal.โ€

As we prepare for the 2026 General Election, New Zealandโ€™s Catholic bishops are encouraging us to vote through the lens of the Gospel.
The bishops' document, โ€˜Discerning our nationโ€™s future through a Gospel lensโ€™, is linked below.

New Zealandโ€™s Catholic bishops have released their 2026 election statement, โ€˜Discerning our nationโ€™s future through a Gospel lensโ€™. The statement promotes voting as a moral and civic responsibility, not simply an expression of personal preference.
The bishopsโ€™ document highlights five key areas for voters to consider as they assess political parties and local candidates.
The bishops also propose a prayer for people to use in the weeks leading up to the election on November 7.

Our chaplains at Hillmorton Hospital recently ran a service and provided a morning tea for the small group of Nepalese staff that work there.

Chaplain Joan said that โ€œThe opportunity to bring the Nepalese people and supporters together came about due to the crisis in Nepal. At the conclusion of the service the morning tea was blessed and the atmosphere was relaxed for sharing. Following the service there have been a number of thanks and positive feedback."
