AMPower Conference Update

Hi everyone,

We wanted to share an update regarding our annual conference.

After careful consideration, the Executive have made the tough decision not to hold a conference this year. A number of factors have influenced this including limited funding, time commitments, venue availability, and clashes with school holidays.

Rather than delivering something that doesn’t meet the standard our community deserves, we’ve chosen to take a step back and refocus. Therefore, moving forward, AFNZ conferences will be held bi-annually, allowing us the time, resources, and energy to create events that are bigger, better, and even more valuable for our members.

We know how much these conferences mean, the connection, the shared experiences, the learning, and that’s exactly why we want to make sure the next one is truly worth the wait.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support. We’re already looking ahead and excited about what’s to come.

Korrin and the AFNZ Executive.

On Saturday my cousin Shellz, fellow Exec member Darren, a bunch of uniquely-abled superstars and I were lucky enough to take part in the Born to Adapt event in the Rotorua Redwoods organised by Peke Waihanga🚶🏼‍♀️‍➡️🌲

Over 100 people of all abilities attended and took part in the walk, choosing between the 1km wheelchair accessible loop, the 1.7km more challenging loop and the 7.5km loop. You could do each loop as many times as you wanted as long as it fell within the event timeframe 🏃🏽‍♂️‍➡️🚶🏼‍♀️‍➡️♿️

I managed to get through the 1.7km loop (and it’s nasty wee hill climb) and then the 1km flat course so not a bad effort. It was a fabulous event enjoyed by all ages and thank you to Matthew Bryson and the whole team for all of your organising and support on the day 🤗

Vikki and I (from the Executive) were privileged to attend the 2025 Stump Club Camp in Lower Moutere, Nelson and what an extraordinary experience it was.

Sixteen young amputees aged 8–15, each accompanied by a parent or support person, came together for a weekend centred on connection, growth, and courage. The camp provided a safe and empowering environment where participants were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and discover what they are truly capable of.

Across the weekend, the rangatahi embraced every challenge presented to them, whether it was rope climbing, backyard cricket, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, or venturing into underground caves. They approached each activity with determination, resilience, and a willingness to try, often surprising themselves with what they could achieve.

The camp was a powerful reminder of the impact that shared experiences, peer support, and positive role models can have. It was a weekend filled with laughter, adventure, personal growth, and an incredible sense of community.

We wholeheartedly encourage all young amputees to attend future Stump Club Camps. The benefits extend far beyond the activities themselves…participants gain confidence, resilience, and strength, as well as the opportunity to form meaningful, lifelong friendships with others who truly understand their journey.

A huge thank you to Whenua Iti Outdoors, Amputee Society of Top of the South and all volunteers for hosting the camp and a special thank you to all of the generous sponsors for backing an incredible weekend. Here’s to 2026 being even bigger!

Also thank you to Hastings District Masonic Trust for supporting Vikki and I to be able to attend the camp.
