Pathway Charitable Group

Pathway Charitable Group We say yes to helping people make a fresh start. At Pathway Charitable Group, we’re all about helping people make a fresh start.

That’s why we offer support with accommodation, employment and prisoner reintegration. We know the impact that arming people with new skills can have - we see it every day! Whether it’s our unique prisoner reintegration programme at Christchurch Men’s Prison, the Navigate Initiative; our residential drug and alcohol programme in partnership with Odyssey House, He Kete Oranga O Te Mana Wāhine; our community housing provider, Pathway Affordable Housing; or the social enterprises that support them, Alloyfold and Oak Tree Devanning, it’s life changing work. Happy Matariki from all of us at Pathway! Last week we celebrated with our Tū Ora at a community lunch where we reflected on Matariki with a short talk and some games. All of the guys pitched in for the feed, making a boil up with bacon bones and veges, alongside fry bread and dessert. A great afternoon of kai, connection and community.

"Your presence could make the world of difference to someone without you ever knowing it."

Nisha volunteers with Pathway's writers' group on Wednesday evenings inside the NI Unit at Christchurch men's Prison, a residential unit where people in the Navigate Initiative are preparing to return to the community.

She recently finished a Certificate in Criminal Justice at the University of Canterbury and is exploring where her career will take her. Volunteering, she says, has shaped how she sees that work.

"When I heard about what Pathway does and the villas at the prison, that's such a crucial time in that person's life when they're about to be reintegrated into the community. I just think that it's a real privilege to actually be able to be involved in that."

What struck her most when she arrived was how the space felt. Less like a prison, more like a small community apart from one.
"You just feel like you're sitting in a room with people. They shouldn't be put into a different category. They're still people, they're still human."

For anyone thinking about it, her message is simple: "If you've got the drive to help, there's nothing stopping you."

This Volunteer Week, we're looking for people ready to show up. Have you ever considered volunteering in a setting like this?

DM us if you’re interested!

"It's a reciprocal relationship. It really showed me the importance of showing up for each other."

Mattie has spent nearly two years volunteering with Pathway's writers' group. She recently started her first job as a social worker, and she's clear that her time volunteering shaped part of her readiness for it.

The writers' group runs weekly inside the Navigate Initiative. Volunteers bring their own strengths, lead activities, share conversation. No two sessions are the same.

One has stayed with Mattie. A Tū Ora who had attended regularly was preparing to leave the programme. The group marked it together, music, kōrero, and an exchange of gratitude.

Mattie is now working at Te Puawaitanga ki Ōtautahi Trust. She describes her time at Pathway not as a stepping stone, but as part of the same picture.

"This work matters because it shows how important fresh starts are."

This Volunteer Week, we're looking for people who want to show up, for others, and for themselves. Have you ever considered volunteering? We'd love to hear from you.

Science confirms what most volunteers already know: giving your time changes you too.

Research shows that volunteering improves mental and physical health, builds real connections, and gives life a stronger sense of purpose. One volunteer described it simply: "It gives me a purpose."

It is Volunteer Week, and we are looking for people who want to make their time count, for others, and for themselves.

Randal works in the office, handles the finances, and by his own admission isn't an artistic person. But over the past year he's been showing up to carving and screen printing workshops inside the Navigate Initiative unit, and the men have welcomed him in. "There's no substitute for just literally going in to see and understand." Read more about his perspective: https://www.pathway.org.nz/news/item/a-new-perspective
