Fit for a Cause presented by 2degrees is just 9 days away!

Our 24-hour fitness fundraiser is all about movement and connection, two things that sit at the heart of what we do at Cholmondeley.

Whether it is tackling the climb to Big Rock at Orton Bradley Park, exploring Godley Head, taking on the Tītoki Track, or pushing through a challenging bike ride or kayaking adventure, our adventure-based learning programme uses physical activity as a way for tamariki to grow.

These experiences connect our tamariki to each other and the world around them, simultaneously fostering a sense of place and connectedness, while also teaching determination and resilience in the face of challenge.

In that same spirit, we are encouraging all teams and participants taking part in Fit for a Cause at Anytime Fitness Cashmere to give it everything they have on the treadmill or exercise bike to rack up the kilometres, and to put just as much energy into fundraising and crowdfunding for Canterbury tamariki and whānau who need support.

Team Cholmondeley will be going hard! You can donate to our efforts here: https://fitforacause.co.nz/t/team-cholmondeley

This National Volunteer Week, we would like to acknowledge and celebrate our incredible international volunteers (vollies) from around the globe - Amelie, Lasse, Lea, Mellie, and Pip from Germany, Olga from Denmark, and Natsuki from Japan.

They bring so much energy, joy, and fun to our Centre each day.

Today, that contribution was recognised at the Volunteering Canterbury Volunteer Recognition Awards, which celebrate and honour the time, commitment, and impact of volunteers across our community.

Our vollies give their time to support activities, help around the Centre, and create fun and memorable experiences for the children who stay with us. In return, we provide food and accommodation so they can fully immerse themselves in life at Cholmondeley and the beautiful Banks Peninsula community.

Check out their profiles to find out more. We're so grateful to have them as part of our whānau.

A huge thanks to Jet Junkies NZ, Naval Point Club Lyttelton, , and to all those who braved the cold before grabbing a hot choccie and making a donation to Cholmondeley. We’re proud to be part of the wider Lyttelton Harbour community and incredibly grateful for the support shown by so many generous locals. Every dollar raised helps us continue providing respite care and support for tamariki and whānau across Canterbury.

And we’re off!

Last Friday we officially unveiled our brand-new flying fox, and it’s already a favourite with our tamariki.

A huge thank you to Odyssey House, and to our neighbours and wider local community, who all played a part in getting the space ready by helping shift bark and prepare the area in the lead-up to the day. Their support made a real difference in bringing the project to life.

Cholmondeley Chief Operating Officer Libby Ornsby led the unveiling, and it was only fair that one of our tamariki got to cut the ribbon after offering to help move the bark around the new play area. Surrounded by other excited tamariki eager for their turn, the flying fox was officially launched and has hardly stopped being used since!

What an incredible day.

A huge thank you to the Hancox and Bailey families for choosing Cholmondeley Children's Centre as the beneficiary charity of this year's Kaide Hancox Bailey Annual Memorial Golf Day.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, an amazing $34,000 was raised to support tamariki and whānau who need our services.

We felt incredibly privileged to be part of such a special event. There was laughter, there were tears, and there was a real sense of community and connection throughout the day. It was clear just how much this event means to so many people.

We're also grateful to the many businesses that donated prizes, and to Tracie and the teams at Runacres Insurance and ILAM TOYOTA for supporting the Hole in One competition.

One of the highlights for our team was meeting people who had spent time at Cholmondeley as children and hearing first-hand about the lasting impact those experiences had on their lives. These conversations are a powerful reminder of why our work matters.

Following a visit to Cholmondeley, Kaide's father Chris has also generously offered to help build a bike shed at our pump track, helping bring another project for our tamariki to life.

To Kaide's family and the wider community around them, thank you. Your generosity, kindness and support will make a lasting difference for the children and families we walk alongside every day.

In case you didn’t know... today is Arbour day and World Environment Day.

At Cholmondeley, we're incredibly fortunate to be located in Governors Bay on Banks Peninsula, surrounded by harbour and native bush.

We don't take this for granted. Our education model is centred on getting tamariki off devices and into the outdoors, where they can learn through hands-on experiences in nature.

Alongside enjoying our local environment, tamariki and staff actively care for it through tree planting in the local area, predator trapping, and growing fruit and vegetables on site to support more sustainable living.

These hands-on activities help tamariki connect with te taiao (the natural world), while learning responsibility, teamwork, and the importance of kaitiakitanga, caring for the environment for future generations.

Started at 4am and now 4 hours in, Toddy is already deep into the Dream Run simulation

But this is bigger than the kilometres.

Toddy Andrews has a dream: to run across Australia in 30 days and he’s doing it to raise funds for Cholmondeley.

From growing up in a single-parent home, to being spotted by legendary coach Neville Sillitoe at just 12 years old, Todd’s journey has always been shaped by someone believing in him.

Now, he’s paying that forward.

Through The Dream Run 26, Todd is using every step to inspire young people to believe in themselves no matter their circumstances.

This weekend is the final test.
