This is just a post to promote Canterbury Socialist Society October event, which is this Wednesday the 14th from 6.30pm at Space Academy:

A Conversation with Asher Emanuel of The Valley

Asher Emanuel’s The Valley: Crime and Punishment in a New Zealand City (2026) is a work of investigative journalism that interrogates the justice system in Aotearoa through the lives and stories of two men, Nathan and Rikihana, from the Hutt Valley in the Wellington region. In its course, The Valley involves issues of housing and homelessness, mental health and addiction, punitive versus rehabilitative or special approaches to crime and its effects, and the roles of various legal workers, from lawyers to judges to probation officers and more. The Canterbury Socialist Society is delighted to host Asher in conversation with our own executive member and law student Courtney Fraser.

The photo shows the crowd dispersing after today's Global March for Palestine here in Christchurch Central today.

Alliance Party of Aotearoa New Zealand Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand Te Pāti Māori palestine party spoke at the event.

I never expected the coalition parties to attend, but where was the central Christchurch labour candidate or any other representative?

I suppose when your Labour leader Chris Hipkins stated that "there is an unfolding genocide taking place in Gaza" during a televised leaders' debate this week, rather than stating the obvious that A GENOCIDE HAS BEEN UNDERWAY for several years now, you conveniently avoid the chance to join citizen led actions to show international solidarity against it.

The city is a great place to have a bicycle. In my case an electric ⚡. The cycle lanes from ensors road, ferry road and high street, through the square and Hagley Park north and through Pūtaringamotu Riccarton Bush to University of Canterbury made for a safe and rapid trip.

Likewise on the way back, via a stop at Turanga.

"The winner was the Opportunity Party. The winner was the Greens, Act, New Zealand First, Legalise Cannabis, Women’s Rights, Alliance, maybe even the terribly obscure Te Pāti Māori—all and any alternatives to National and Labour came out looking fresh and viable alternatives at the end of the Leaders Debate."

Ethan Gullery - Alliance Party candidate for Christchurch East and I attended the Canterbury Tax Reform Coalition & Ecuaction 'meet the candidates' last night at the Aldersgate Centre.

It was well attended and there were 12 candidates representing alliance, greens, labour, nz first, act, top.

The format split candidates into two different parties and had us moving around four tables, Climate Change, Health & Welfare, Education & Training and Underlying Causes of Inequality.

I was paired with the top candidates, one representing southland and the other rangitata. Ethan was paired with the greens, Mike & Kahu representing.

There was a primary question for each table with candidates having two minutes to answer and then questions from the community relating to the table topic.

It certainly helped when I got to the health table as Ethan, our health spokesperson, had already been there and as such the focus was on what top had to say. As the party spokesperson for the Environment & Climate, i got the chance to reciprocate.

We had some great conversation during the clean up after the event. A huge thanks to the organisers and everyone who attended.

A great job by Erica and Elliott speaking to the petition which Ōtautahi Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa outreach presented to Christchurch City Council this morning.

A great turn out of Christchurch residents to support as well

We have collected signatures this year at the Lyttelton markets

"In response to Israel’s flagrant breaches of International Law, including Crimes against Humanity in Palestine and its role in the current outbreak of an illegal war against Iran and Lebanon.

We, the undersigned residents of Ōtautahi/Christchurch, call upon the Christchurch City Council to ban Israeli shipping (such as Zim Shipping) from using Lyttelton port facilities".

Caught up with Kahurangi and Mike outside Space Academy tonight as people were heading into tonight's Rock' en' rol gig all in the name of reminding/encouraging the good folk of Ōtautahi (particularly the young adults) to enrol, to vote in this years general election.

I was there early with my Ōtautahi Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa outreach hat on promoting Friday flag waving and this Saturday's rally at the Bridge of Remembrance.

Gig is just underway so come on down for Pickle Darling, FERBY, Velveteen & Model Home.

I love the nonpartisan approach but by my reckoning, there don't appear to be any of those who have created the "anti-youth enrollment" effect with their legislative changes to voter registration laws.

Ten people and what they see as the biggest issues this election. By far and away it is the cost of living. See those issues below

“Surely it’s the cost of living. So many people seem to be struggling to survive financially, and I can’t see things improving a lot in the short term"
“This election is about the cost of living. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that almost each time you go to the supermarket, you are gradually coming out with less and less with the same amount of money".

“The most important issue this election is poverty bred by inadequate support and income".

“Tax is the most important issue for New Zealand to solve. Tax is required to supply the critical services expected. Collecting enough money to meet the community’s agreed needs is the issue. Fairness and ability to pay should be the goal".

“The most important issue for this election is the health crisis, which needs to be tackled urgently".

“The most urgent issue in this election is the erosion of democracy".

"I believe the most important issue this election is the cost of living".

"if forced to choose one issue, it would be wealth inequality".

"positive policies that are well considered and costed to deliver the outcomes...........a sound business case”.

“Without a doubt, the cost of living is the most important issue in this election".

For anyone still not getting why people have been protesting over the two days outside the NZ aerospace summit............

Promoted to bridge the gap between technical ex*****on and global vision. "Speakers included representatives of the New Zealand Defence Force, Defence Science and Technology and the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service".

I spoke briefly on the connections between a number of the speakers and who they represent, and those connections to the increase in armed conflict across the planet and our complicity in the genocide being carried out in Gaza.

Our country needs an independent, non-aligned foreign policy that breaks ties with major military-intelligence blocs like the Five Eyes. Vote Alliance Party of Aotearoa New Zealand and we will relentlessly pursue this.
