At least 3 x each week when she walks to shops or visits a friend Louise takes a paper bag and picks up 5 pieces of litter from the gutters.

As Louise says, “It can be hard to stop at 5 and sometimes I just have to pick a few more. It's such a neat idea and so easy to do and I am hoping that many others will do the same”.

Young hero spotted!!!
Just HAD to stop my car to find out why this Primary school aged girl was picking up rubbish along Dyers Road! She explained that she was "doing her bit" for the environment to achieve her William Pike Badge. WOW, well done Aiesha, well done her mum Mel for encouraging and assisting her daughter and well done MtPleasant Primary School for encouraging students to achieve this badge. Aiesha: You are our Estuary Trust HERO of the month.

It has never been so easy to get behind an idea... is going off! Simply pick up 5 pieces of litter (or more) each time you are out of your property...and put them in an appropriate bin.

It could be from the gutter outside your home....or on your daily walk to the cafe...or on your walk to work. Take a bag...make it easy to do good for your local waterway!

PickUp5...and share this post with your friends to spread the message.

How to celebrate World Rivers Day? Join the Pickup5 campaign!

Today is World Rivers Day! We celebrate our beautiful, life-giving Ōpāwaho Heathcote River by acknowledging its importance to our city. We do that by protecting it, however we can, from contaminants - litter, copper from car brake pads, zinc from roofs and tyres, dog poo, sediment from erosion.

We all have a bit to play: fitting copper-free brake pads, using our cars less, picking up dog poo, not parking on the riverbank, planting trees to prevent erosion, picking up litter.

The Ōpāwaho Heathcote River is a Christchurch taonga.
