Happy World Giraffe Day from our tower to yours! Held on June 21st every year, this date was chosen to celebrate the world’s tallest animal, as it is the longest day (northern hemisphere) and longest night (southern hemisphere) of the year.

A big thank you to those who braved the rain and cold to come along today to learn more about these beautiful animals. Did you visit us for World Giraffe Day? We'd love to see any photos you took.

Also a big thank you to our amazing team for putting so many great activities together!

Sadly these incredible animals are facing a "silent extinction" as over the last 35 years, roughly 30% of the world’s giraffe population has disappeared. It is considered a “silent extinction” because there is very little public awareness of their plight.

Please don’t buy wild animal souvenirs. By avoiding items from wild animals, we help preserve species and support sustainable, ethical tourism.

📸: Enjoying the activities and face painting, even our volunteers got involved, aren’t they they best!

At Orana, our volunteers are extraordinary. Their passion, energy and commitment help bring conservation to life and create unforgettable experiences for our visitors. From leading walkabout tours to driving shuttles and spot guiding, they are an essential part of everything we do.

Today we're introducing you to Rivers – a busy scientist, student and sports coach who volunteers to find balance. “I wanted an escape from my everyday life of studying and working. I’ve loved Orana since I was a kid, so it felt like the perfect place to give my time and free my mind.”

Now, she spends a day each fortnight guiding visitors between animal presentations and sharing her passion for conservation. “Helping people see how they can make a difference really motivates me. I love connecting with visitors, other volunteers and, of course, the animals. It’s the perfect break away from my routine.”

❓ FUN FACT FRIDAY ❓ A spider monkeys tail acts as an extra hand! The bare tip works like a soft, grippy palm, perfect for grabbing branches or scooping up a snack mid-swing. And just like us, no two are the same, each monkey has its own one-of-a-kind tail print.

This National Volunteer Week we're shining the light of some of the incredible people of Orana!

Meet Phil, one of our wonderful shuttle drivers. After 48 years of working indoors, Phil was ready for a new kind of challenge in retirement, one that involved sunshine, storytelling, and a little adventure. He saw an advert for shuttle drivers at Orana and thought, "wow, that’s me!”. Now, he spends Wednesdays driving people around the Park, chatting about Reggie the tiger, our gentle giraffes and the cheeky kea.

For Phil, it’s about more than the animals. “I’ve learned so much about wildlife and conservation, and I’ve built new friendships. It’s kept me active - physically and mentally.”

As we head towards our 50th birthday, we'd love to know who your favourite animal to visit - past or present is?
Was it Jomo the lion, Harold the giraffe, Bob the saddleback or is it Jane the cockatoo, Utani the rhino or Arthur the kea?

Orana turns 50 in September. If you'd like to share your memories visit our website (link in bio).

This new role will focus on building impactful partnerships that support conservation, education, and the vision and long-term future of the Park. It’s an opportunity to create meaningful change, not just raise funds.

We are looking for someone passionate about our kaupapa, who can identify opportunities, build strong relationships, and turn them into significant outcomes. If you are ready to be part of something ambitious or know someone who is, we would love to hear from you!
