Seminar on Great Power Rivalry in Southeast Asia | October 10 ay 4pm | In person and on Zoom.

SEARI will be hosting a seminar on 'Great Power Rivalry and Southeast Asian
Agency: Southeast Asia in an Era of US-China Strategic Competition'. The talk will be given by Associate Professor Nicholas Khoo from Otago University.

Great rivalry is a structural feature in Southeast Asia’s international politics which three decades of post-Cold War academic analysis and diplomatic activity has sought and failed to transcend. The acknowledgement of its return to a central role in the analysis of Southeast Asia’s international politics is both illuminating and instructive. Accordingly, this presentation discusses the region’s international politics around the following great power-related themes: the arrival of Chinese power in Southeast Asia; the return of Chinese activism and US-China rivalry in Southeast Asia; contingent Southeast Asian agency; and the value of theory in illuminating these dynamics. Discussion refers closely to three recent prominent books on great power rivalry in Southeast Asia written by Murray Hiebert, David Shambaugh, and Sebastian Strangio.

*Webinar on Indonesia's 2025 Budget*
August 20| 10:00am-11:15am (SG Time)| Zoom

The ISEAS- Yusof Ishak Institute is hosting a webinar on is hosting a webinar on Indonesia's 2025 budget and economic outlook.

The Indonesian government’s fiscal stance for 2025 aims to maintain continuity in development policies while accommodating the programs of the new administration led by the President-elect Prabowo Subianto. A sound fiscal policy will be critical to achieving Indonesia’s Golden Vision of becoming a developed economy by 2045 and achieving Prabowo’s eight-percent annual economic growth target.

As the global economic situation remains uncertain, the next government will face tough challenges to ensure prudent fiscal management while implementing various flagship programs, such as the free school lunch program, the new capital Nusantara project and the projected military spending increase. Prudent fiscal management is therefore important to keep investors’ confidence in the country’s economic stability amid rising financial pressures, lower commodity prices, and slowing global investment flow. This seminar will highlight some of the key fiscal policy measures under the current and next administrations as well as the political economy of implementing difficult fiscal reforms. The speaker will also discuss the major challenges facing the Indonesian economy in 2025 and beyond.

The ISEAS- Yusof Ishak Institute is organising a Webinar on 'Are the People Empowered? First-year Review of Malaysia’s Madani Economy'.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim launched his Madani Economy Framework in July 2023. Themed “empowering the people”, the Madani framework aspires to make Malaysia a leading Asian economy and to improve the country’s global standing in economic size, competitiveness, human development, and corruption perception. Under the Madani banner, Anwar’s Unity government also seeks to generate new investment and good jobs, distribute economic benefits fairly, reduce government deficits, and promote green growth.

This webinar reviews the Madani Economy at the one-year mark. Our speakers will evaluate the state of workers and households amid new opportunities and uncertainties, and the track record of sustainable development. We will also examine the prospects for energy transition and industrial transformation, and whether SMEs are truly being empowered to drive the economy forward.
