It's a Halo-halo day for Supling Filipino Playgroup in Richmond. A simple, authentic halo-halo requires shaved ice, evaporated milk, and a mix of sweetened pantry staples like sweetened beans (red/white), nata de coco (coconut gel), jackfruit (langka), palm seeds (kaong), and macapuno. Top with ube halaya (purple yam), leche flan, and ube ice cream for a classic, creamy finish. But for today, we had a very simple halo-halo: a mix of sweetened beans, nata de coco, kaong, macapuno and jelly finished with an organic milk enjoyed fully by our children.

The origin of Halo-halo dates back to the pre-World War II era. The Japanese settlers brought many aspects of their culture to the Philippines, one of which was Kakigori, a Japanese-style shaved ice dessert.

Today, halo-halo have evolved through a history of rich cultural diversity and adapting to contemporary preferences. It embodies the country's history of blending indigenous ingredients with Spanish, American, and Japanese influences. It can be found in every corner of the Philippines and has been spread globally by Filipino migrants and travelers.
