WHAT WOULD EVAN THINK?

Today is the 5th anniversary of the death of Evan Smith: co-founder of the Avon-Ōtākaro Network who inspired us all with the concept of a Green Spine and city-to-sea trail.

Take time to meander along the trail (City to Sea Pathway), reflect on what Evan would say about the evolution of the trail. How can you help his dream come to fruition? Plant a tree? Pick up rubbish? Learn about stormwater contamination of the awa? Join a community or environmental organisation?

How might you, too, advocate for ‘local matters’ and the people in your suburb?

"We’re excited to introduce Huanui the pīwakawaka (fantail), your friendly digital guide! Over the next 12 months, Huanui will take you on a series of walking and biking adventures — accessible, inspiring, and perfect for all ages and abilities."

"A digital fantail called Huanui - meaning road or pathway - features on a newly launched website that shares community-based stories of the 11km long City to Sea Pathway."

"The online pīwakawaka is the mascot of community-led regeneration group Avon Ōtākaro Network.
"Huanui interacts with trail users in a friendly way and shows them what to look out for along the Green Spine trail that runs from the CBD to New Brighton," said the network's patron Reverend Peter Beck.
Huanui offers stories and information for people to read as they explore the trail through the former red zone, which the network hopes wil be rebranded as the 'Green Spine'.
The information is given in bite-size chunks and is listed under five categories of interest:
A heritage trail, the re-photography project, city landmarks, community spaces, and environmental restoration projects."
