Kia ora everyone,
Christchurch City Council is urging residents to get prepared ahead of severe winds forecast to hit our region today and tomorrow.
Canterbury is currently under a red wind warning, with destructive winds of up to 130km/h expected across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula. These winds could cause widespread damage, including downed trees and powerlines, dangerous driving conditions, and disruption to transport and power supply. High temperatures are also increasing the risk of fire.
Here’s what you can do to prepare today:
Secure or bring inside any loose outdoor items such as furniture, trampolines, and rubbish bins.
Postpone outdoor activities and avoid trees in parks and gardens.
Avoid unnecessary travel from this evening and consider changing any travel plans.
A total ban on outdoor fires and fireworks is in force due to the extreme fire danger. Check any recent fires are completely out and cold.
Check on neighbours, friends, and whānau who may need assistance.
Ensure pets and stock have safe shelter, and gates and fences are secure.
Charge mobile phones, torches, and power banks in case of power or communication outages.
