Taking the families of our crew sailing is an important way to say thank you to them for holding the fort while we are out voyaging. Plus we need all the brownie points we can get! Loved all the tamariki on board, some of whom didn’t want to leave.

Surveyor Robin Williams looking for any structural issues in the hull of Hinemoana. Tap tap

Tapping the hulls makes different sounds and can let us know if there are any structural problems. It’s our first Maritime survey for us down here in Te Waipounamu. We were privileged to have surveyor Robin Williams, who’s had a long association with waka hourua and many vessels across the Pacific. Te Toki also sent Anna B to guide us through and of course Capt Greg has been popping over giving us a hand. Ngā mihi to Ngāti Wheke and their tangata tiaki for allowing us to beach up and for working with us to make sure we didn’t bring any pests into their ecosystem.

Relationships in the waka community allow for the sharing of knowledge. We are so grateful to Jack Thatcher and Ngahiraka for opening up opportunities for the next cohort of navigators. We had two of our Flying Geese crew onboard. Tonya Marriott and Hohepa Bowen are students in this cohort. Tonya is also sailing to Rekohu/Wharekauri/Chatham Islands next week as part of her training.

Another cool aspect is having Ngahiraka visiting down here so we get to share whakawhanaungatanga. Currently they are hosted by Ngāti Wheke at Rapaki.
