Hercules
Hercules was bred to be my next horse — my special “last horse” — as my much-loved riding horse, Mo, is now almost 22. Six years ago Mo suffered a serious spinal injury. With a lot of rehabilitation he has returned to light work, but I know that, sooner than I would like, his body will tell us that it is time to slow down.
I owned Hercules’ dam, Zippy, and my friend and trainer imported his sire, Tru Masterplan, from Colorado. It was impossible not to be impressed by Tru — not only by his looks, but by his exceptionally steady temperament and wonderful brain. We decided to breed Zippy to Tru, and Hercules was the result.
Tru was sold not long afterwards to an anonymous owner, and the opportunity to breed to him was unfortunately lost. This made Hercules rather special. He was the only purebred c**t by Tru, and as he appeared to have inherited the wonderful temperaments of both his sire and dam, we decided to take a chance and keep him entire.
That decision became a huge learning curve for us, but Hercules made it possible. He has always been such a cool, sensible boy. I worked closely with Ken Hawkins to learn how to raise and handle a c**t, and together we successfully took Hercules to Paint Nationals as a two-year-old c**t, where he handled the whole experience with remarkable ease.
We collected from Hercules before gelding him at three, allowing me to get on with enjoying him and taking him out into the world. With only around 50 rides under his belt, I took him to the Waikato Show in hand, followed by Paint Nationals for his debut under saddle. He was, of course, still very green, but he quietly did everything that was asked of him, even competing in open classes. Those two outings were enough to earn him Runner-Up High Point Junior Horse.
Now we are taking the next steps together. I am introducing Hercules to the hackamore and, more importantly, to the wider world beyond the arena.
He has been a special horse from the very beginning, and I am incredibly excited to see where this journey takes us.
