MenzShed congratulates Cheviot Area School Head Boy Maxim Cave for creating this military display which will be available for viewing in the school gym at the ANZAC Service following the Cenotaph Service tomorrow. It's well worth taking a look.

The 2 new stainless steel panel memorials to our fallen soldiers have been installed on the Cenotaph and look great.
All the painting is complete and ready for ANZAC Day.
This will be a great event as Mayor Marie Black will officiate and students from Cheviot Area School will march in the parade to the Cenotaph. And, of course celebrating the 100 year old Cenotaph.
TV1 has been following this project, even filming the etching process of the panels. This is likely to appear on 7 Sharp over the coming weeks. We’ll advise when as soon as we know.
This has been a fantastic and rewarding project and we’ve valued the support and encouragement we’ve had from the community.
Special thanks to the MenzShed team Simon Chester, David Tabor, & Mike Erkkila, Tradies Mike Botica, Mick Mauger, & Signtech.

GUESS WHAT!!!
100 YEARS AGO our War Memorial Cenotaph was unveiled to the Cheviot Community in March 1926. The foundation was laid in 1920 taking 6 years to complete.
This makes the restoration project much more significant.

MenzShed is extremely grateful for the support of 2 local tradies – Mike Bottica (Painting) & Mick Mauger (Stone Mason) for their expertise in the restoration. Mick is repairing some of the eroded areas on the cenotaph and repairs to cracks in the concrete wall around the reserve.

The MenzShed Team have scraped away all the lose flaky paint ready for Mike to paint once the repairs are complete.

The 2 stainless panels which will replace the existing memorials, are in production. So, it’s with great excitement and cause to celebrate that the cenotaph, concrete wall & rails around the reserve, and the McKenzie monument will be looking splended for ANZAC Day. “Lest we forget”.

There’s activity around the cenotaph.
MenzShed in conjunction with our local ANZAC committee has raised funds through Cheviot Community Committee and Domett Reserves Board to remove all the flakey paint ready for a refresh.
With the help of paint tradie Mike Botica who is donating his time, a special coating will be applied which will last much longer.
The surface is sandstone mortar and is breaking down. So much so that the names are being eroded away.
These are being replaced with two stainless steel remembrance panels at a cost of $5,500.00.
This will future proof the names of the Cheviot area servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Hopefully there will be sufficient funds to clean up and refresh the McKenzie monument and the concrete wall around the reserve at the same time.
All in time for ANZAC Day 2026.

"Shed was a pretty big job mate!" For the last 2 terms of school 2 lads - George & Baxter came to MenzShed each Friday and under the guidance of Simon Chester, constructed this large octagonal outdoor table to be used by students at school.

The boys had to design, plan & workout the timber & hardware materials needed to construct the table.
Simon inducted them on the use of our drop saw and other workshop safety then the boys set about cutting the timber to size, undercoating it and preparing for construction.

Simon said it was a great learning project for them as there were lots of angles and cutting jobs. He was impressed how quickly they took to the project showing great initiative and both George & Baxter said they learned a lot and really enjoyed being able to construct the table which will last many years.

Cheviot MenzShed is proud of the lads achievement and to have been able to work with students.
We hope this will continue as apart from woodworking, we'll soon be able to offer light engineering & mechanics.

We will also be discussing with the school how students can qualify for credits or unit standards for these projects.

A busy week at MenzShed. We’ve got visitors coming so we have to tidy our room!!
On Thursday we’re hosting representatives of Canterbury MenzShed’s for a Hub meeting. Two of three are held each year and it’s a great opportunity to show off our place, meet other Sheddies to share ideas and hear what’s going on around the Region.
A special thanks to Harris Farms and Cheviot Four Square for sponsoring the BBQ lunch.
It’s the second time we’ve hosted a Hub meeting. The first was 5 years ago soon after our building was placed on site and was just an empty shell, so they’re keen to see what we’ve achieved.

We had a great weekend with visitors & sales to Celebrate Cheviot. We had a sheep shearing demo by Rob Nikolaison and John Waters set up an axe throwing alley for visitors to try their luck. A few wayward throws added to the entertainment. No living creatures were harmed!
We thank our sponsors for the events & spot prizes - Mitre 10 Mega Rangiora, Cheviot Four Square, Cheviot Hardware, Gifts & Finds, Cheviot NZ.
We also thank everyone who purchased bargains from our garage sale. Your support allows us to donate half the proceeds to the Cheviot Historical Society & Museum toward their upgrade costs. Thank you all again.
