MetService New Zealand has issued a Strong Wind Warning for Hawke’s Bay south of Hastings, period of 8 hours from 8am to 4pm Sunday, 27 September.

Severe gales west to northwest are forecast to become severe with gusts reaching 120 km/h in exposed places.

⚠️Strong wind gusts like these could damage trees, powerlines, and unsecured structures.

🚗 Take extra care on the roads (especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles)

🏠♻️🗑 🪑 Secure any outdoor items like wheelie bins, trampolines and outdoor furniture that may blow around.

✅ Do you have any large burns planned?

✅ Or are you planning a large burn such as a burn pile, skid site, forestry slash or any other large burn?

✅ Now is the time to undertake these fires, with the prediction of an El Nino summer approaching.

❗️Information below:

🔥 El Niño could bring a dangerous fire season for NZ.

An El Niño is forecast, bringing drier conditions through late winter and a warmer, drier and windier summer, particularly in our District.

This could mean a much higher wildfire risk, with escaped fires becoming harder to control. Fire restrictions and prohibitions may need to be introduced earlier this year.

🔥 If you have a large burn planned, now is the time to get it done. Large piles can smoulder for a long time, so make sure they are completely extinguished before fire danger increases.

If you can’t burn the whole pile, reduce the size and feed the fire gradually.

It was very disappointing to find that a brigade member's vehicle was vandalised while parked outside the station last night. Our brigade members spend considerable time away from family & friends and don't want to be worried about their vehicles & property being safe while training or attending callouts.

Please visit the Tikokino Brigade this Sunday 10am-2pm and get your car washed for $20. Larger vehicles by negotiation on the day!

We’re keeping a close eye on the forecast, with strong winds and heavy rain expected to impact parts of the North Island over the coming days. Now’s the time to get a few small things sorted before it hits. Especially for our rural community, a bit of prep now can make a big difference 👇

🚜 Around your property:
• Secure loose items (trampolines, tanks, tools, bins) wind can turn them into hazards
• Clear gutters and drains to help prevent flooding
• Check trees/branches near buildings, fences, and driveways
• Move stock to sheltered paddocks if possible

🔦 Be ready for power outages:
• Charge phones, power banks, and torches
• Have spare batteries and candles handy
• Keep a backup water supply if you’re on tank water

🚗 Travel & access:
• Avoid unnecessary travel during peak weather
• Be mindful of surface flooding, slips, and fallen trees
• Let someone know your movements if you’re heading out rural

🏡 General prep:
• Bring pets inside or ensure they have shelter
• Tie down anything lightweight around the house
• Check in on neighbours, especially elderly or isolated
